2022 Home Decor Trends and Design Styles You Will Love (2024)

With each new year comes an opportunity to re-think our spaces and create more comfort, style, and beauty in our homes. With that in mind, I’ve been scouting out the 2022 home decor trends and design styles to share with you.

But before we get into the top interior design trends for 2022, when it comes to decorating your home, there really are no hard and fast rules–other than doing what makes you happy and resonates with your own design style.

While I can almost always find something to love and appreciate about different design styles and perspectives, they aren’t necessarily all for me.

That said, I do think it helps to learn about the latest design styles and decorating trends, because it expands your awareness of what’s out there and opens your mind to new ideas and possibilities for your own home.

Often, just by looking at your spaces with a fresh perspective, you can play around with what you already own and create an entirely new look in your home!

What are the home decorating trends for 2022?

Several recurrent trends are appearing for interiors in 2022. Some of the most popular elements include curves and arches, the return of herringbone flooring, and bringing nature indoors through color and plants.

From the growing popularity of natural materials, to pared-back minimalist design, to more versatile spaces, there are plenty of reasons to get excited about this year, especially when it comes to decorating our homes.

Is farmhouse style out for 2022?

While modern farmhouse style is still extremely popular, in 2022 and 2023 we’ll see this style continue to evolve into a more elevated look, borrowing aspects from European farmhouse style.

With the addition of natural elements, textures, vintage pieces, and earth tones, farmhouse style is growing up into a classic, timeless aesthetic.

If a single space could encompass all the interior design trends for 2022, it would be this stylish kitchen from Studio McGee. Light and airy, incorporating natural elements like plants, warm woods, rattan (and curved barstools), this European-inspired, modern farmhouse kitchen is both timeless and on trend.

What interior design styles are trending for 2022?

In 2022 and beyond, interiors are increasingly becoming less about what’s trendy and more about personal expression.

Rather than specific trends declining, we’re starting to see the lines between different design styles blurring, and as you scroll through below, you’ll see an interesting mix of decorating styles. One example of this merging of design styles is minimalism and maximalism.

On one hand, there’s the modern or minimalist look, incorporating luxe, marble and black elements. On the other hand, there’s the maximalist look, incorporating layered textures, lots of plants, and vintage pieces.

The common thread I’m seeing with these two perspectives is the incorporation of natural, organic materials in the home.

As both of these decorating styles are on trend in 2022, feel free to find your own take on either, leading to a more personal approach to interior design and home decor.

See my post, How to Choose a Design Style that Feels Right for You, for more on this topic.

What furniture is in style for 2022?

For furniture design trends in 2022, look for curves, texture, and comfort.

You’ll see lots of curved chairs, sofas with gently sloping arms, and round poufs in velvet, linen, and nubby boucle fabrics.

In addition to natural wood tones and vintage pieces, we’ll also see a return of black accent pieces.

Marble furniture and accents will also be popular in 2022.

But, above all, comfortable seating and easy-care fabrics will take center stage.

Read on for more predictions for trends in home decor and interior styles, including kitchen design trends, furniture, living rooms, colors, and spring 2022 decor trends.

What are the Latest Trends in Home Decorating for 2022?

Trend 1: Curve appeal

In 2022, we’ll continue to see lots of rounded furniture, including curved backs on chairs, sloped arms on sofas, rounded waterfall corners on desks and consoles, drum tables and ottomans, as well as curved accent pieces.

When I think of this trend, often a boho style space comes to mind; however as you’ll see in the spaces below, curves and arches can be a stylish and elegant addition to any style of home.

Whether you love or hate this trend, curves do add instant personality to a space, as well as creating a sense of softness and femininity.

In the coming year we’ll also see lots of curved architectural elements in the home, including arched doorways, curved bar designs and curved kitchen island countertops:

Trend 2: Luxury – in small doses

2022 decor trends will see luxurious makeovers to some of the the least-expected spots in the home, including luxury laundry rooms, closets, kids’ bedrooms, basem*nts–even garages!

Elevating often-ignored spaces within the home, like the powder room, home office, and entryway, will be on trend in the coming year.

But adding a luxurious feeling to a space doesn’t have to involve an entire overhaul. You can easily find ways to add luxury touches to your home through thoughtful details such as wallpaper, picture lights, luxurious throws, and scented soaps next to kitchen and bathroom sinks.

Trend 3: Restorative spaces

We all want our spaces to feel as good as they look, so in 2022 and beyond, the sensory experiences of our homes will become more important than ever.

People want to make their home feel like a retreat, so as they update their homes, they’re taking into account things like lighting, sound, and tactility, designing spaces to encourage restoration and relaxation.

Scent

Interior design trends of 2022 aren’t limited to tactile and visual considerations — in the coming year, scent will take center stage as people aromatize different areas of their home to create certain moods.

  • For example, you might use peppermint or grapefruit in your home office to promote mental focus.
  • In the bedroom, you might choose orange to promote sound sleep.
  • In the living room, you might choose a woodsy fragrance, like cedar or spruce, to promote good vibes and feelings of sitting next to a warm fire.
  • And in the bathroom, you might add a touch of lavender to your bath water to promote relaxation.

Trend 4: Nature inspired color palettes

Color trends for 2022

Tying in with the other decor trends in this post, a landscape-inspired palette of soothing greens, timeless blues, and warm earth tones will dominate in 2022–which is wonderful, as natural color schemes have been shown to reduce stress, increase productivity and creativity, and generally make us happier.

If you saw my post on theTop Home Color Trends for 2022, you know green was at the top of almost everyone’s “Colors of the Year” list.

Although green is the “it” color for 2022, for a timeless look, I always return to blue as a color that promotes positivity and elegance in a space without being too overwhelming–or underwhelming!

Blue works well with all other hues and tones, bringing a lightness and reassuring quality to our homes that will resonate with our lifestyles in 2022 and beyond.

Trend 5: Plants and biophilic design

In keeping with the nature-inspired trend, our love for bringing the outdoors in will continue, but in a more sophisticated way.

Indoor trees, especially lemon trees and olive trees planted in large pots, will take center stage in the home.

Trend 6: Textured fabrics

Bring on the textured fabrics! Maybe it’s because we’ve all spent so much time at home lately, but cozy fabrics like velvet, boucle, and sherpa are continuing to trend for 2022.

Soft fabrics not only feel amazing but look chic and luxurious. And, as you know, I’m a big fan of velvet, but I’m just now venturing into the world of boucle.

At first, I wasn’t a fan; however, the nubby look is starting to grow on me! And with places like Target and TJ Maxx offering an assortment of boucle pillows and throws, this is a trend that’s not only chic but budget-friendly!

Trend 8: Minimalist spaces

For the last few years, designers have promoted minimalism as a way to create a calming aesthetic in the home, and this trend is now resonating more than ever.

Minimalism can enhance the livability of a space by reducing visual clutter and highlighting the main purpose of a room, making it easier to relax and focus.

Trend 9: Vintage finds

Another 2022 decor trend carrying over from 2021 is the popularity of one-of-a-kind vintage finds.Between supply chain issues and a greater focus on the environment, vintage furniture and décor will be an important trend in the coming year.

Moreover, vintage finds add unique personality and interest to a space while demonstrating a love and respect for the past. Think beautiful woods, warm tones and textures, and curated rooms filled with character.

I love the incorporation of a vintage dresser in this beautiful bedroom. Along with the woven light fixture and wood beams, this lovely vintage piece adds a touch of texture to offset all the soft finishes in this space. From Janette Mallory Interiors:

Trend 11: Black accent pieces

In 2022 and 2023, people will design their homes with their pets in mind, from luxury dog rooms to cat homes.

Our pets are part of our families, so creating specific spaces that are just for them makes sense, and I think we’ll see more of this pet-centric trend in the future.

Up and Coming Design Trends for 2023:

I couldn’t fit all the 2022 design styles and home decor trends in one post, so here are a few more trends that will continue to grow in popularity well into 2023:

  • Coastal Grandmother. This popular home and lifestyle trend emerged in 2022 and is continuing to gain traction in the interior design world. Incorporating a mix of modern coastal style and Nancy Meyers inspired interiors, the coastal grandma aesthetic is all about a relaxed, elevated lifestyle anyone can embrace-even if they don’t live near the coast (and aren’t a grandmother!). In this home decor trend, you’ll see plenty of easy-care white slipcovered furniture, colors of the sea and sand, and natural and organic elements–all of which speak to a relaxed, more intentional way of living and decorating. See my post, What is Coastal Grandmother Style? (and why I love it), for more on this decorating trend.
  • Outdoor Living. Homeowners are turning their outdoor areas and patios into mini vacation destinations for spring and summer 2023 outdoor living, as evidenced by the popularity of outdoor fireplaces and fire pits, swimming pools, and raised-bed gardening. See my post, Beautiful Patio Ideas for Relaxed Outdoor Living, for more ideas for your outdoor spaces.
  • Creative Solutions for Working from Home. Including nooks, closets, and flexible lighting and storage solutions. See my post, Beautiful & Stylish Home Office Ideas, for more inspiration.
  • Luxury Bedrooms. More than ever, our bedrooms are becoming a refuge from the outside world, with things like luxurious bedding, a comfy mattress, a space to relax, do yoga or meditate, and a quiet place to work. See my post, Modern Bedroom Design Ideas for a Dreamy Master Suite, for more ideas for creating a calming and luxurious bedroom.

I hope you enjoyed this post! The great thing about the majority of these home trends is that they’re here to stay, which means we’ll be able to enjoy them well into 2023 and beyond.
