Smoking is often considered an integral part of Jamaican culture due to the strong presence of Rastafarianism on the island. Because of this many visitors take it for granted that cigarettes, cigars, vapes and of course marijuana are all legal and while in Jamaica you can smoke as much of whatever you would like.

It usually comes as a shock when they discover that marijuana is a banned substance that has only been decriminalised for medical and religious purposes recently. And even then, it is only in small quantities and will still attract a small fine.

There is no ban on smoking tobacco, cigars and cigarettes in Jamaica, but smoking is not permitted in public areas, including resorts in Jamaica.

Can you smoke in Jamaican resorts?

Most resorts on the island allow smoking as long as it is in the designated smoking areas on the property.

No, you cannot smoke on the balcony of a resort in Jamaica.

Can you smoke at Sandals Jamaica?

Sandals Resorts’ smoking policies are in line with the smoking policies of Jamaica. Smoking is not permitted in the rooms, on the balconies or in common areas of any Sandals resort, including the beach and pool.

Smoking is allowed in the designated smoking areas.

Can you smoke at RIU Montego Bay?

Again, Riu resorts have designated smoking areas, smoking is not allowed poolside nor in any of the restaurants or bars on the property. There are three smoking areas at Riu Montego Bay.

Yes, many people smoke in Jamaica. Marijuana, cigarettes, cigars and in most recent times, vapes are all used quite frequently in Jamaica.

Marijuana is not permitted for recreational use but decriminalised for medicinal and religious purposes in small quantities at dispensaries for Rastafarians.

How many cigarettes can I take to Jamaica?

Anyone that has reached the age of 18 is allowed to carry no more than 200 cigarettes on the island. You are also allowed 50 cigars and ½ pound of tobacco.

Can I bring a vape to Jamaica?

Yes, vapes are classified as tobacco products which mean vaping is allowed in areas where smoking is permitted. The sale of e-cigarettes is prohibited in specific locations, including government, educational and healthcare facilities.

Most resorts, especially larger ones will not permit the smoking of marijuana or smoking outside of the designated areas. All hotels in Jamaica will ban smoking in rooms. Weed Friendly accommodations are usually boutique hotels or vacation rentals such as villas or Airbnbs.

The latter forms of accommodation are likely to have fewer persons who will be affected by smoking.
