Earlier this year, scientists in China were successful in creating a temporary artificial star, three times hotter than the core of the sun.
This artificial star was created using nuclear fusion in a doughnut-shaped chamber in eastern China. Here is all you need to know about the artificial star.
Scientists produced hydrogen gas more than three times hotter than the core of the Sun and were able to maintain this temperature for 102 seconds.
The creation of this man-made star helps China in harnessing a new kind of solar energy for clean and unlimited energy.
The experiment was conducted on a magnetic fusion reactor at the Institute of Physical Science Jiangsu province.
The interior of our Sun is around 15 million Kelvins, and the reactor was able to heat a hydrogen gas to about 50 million Kelvins and made the artificial star hotter than the core of the Sun and 8,600 times hotter than the Earth's core.
The reactor is known as the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) and was invented by Soviet scientists to control nuclear fusion for power generation.
Efforts are bring made to create a viable source of energy from nuclear fusion reactors to reduce dependency on the use fossil fuels.
The project has costed approximately 300 million yuan (2,955,526,411 rupees).
Physicists in Japan and Europe reached the same temperature as the Chinese team but not for the same amount of time due to fear of a reactor meltdown.
