On the wedding day, wedding bands are usually exchanged by partners. But what about the engagement ring?

Do you wear your engagement ring on your wedding day?

Yes, but not anywhere!

Traditional etiquette requires the bride to move her engagement ring to her other hand (if necessary) while walking down the aisle. This must be done if the wedding band is to be placed onto the finger currently "taken" by the engagement ring. Moving the engagement ring to the other hand allows for the hand to be "free" and for the wedding band to take its entire and full meaning on its very own special day: the wedding day.

Let us observe how this rule applies in America, in Germany, and in Austria.

  • On proposal day: the engagement ring is worn onto the left hand´s ring finger.
  • On wedding day - down the aisle: the bride switches her engagement ring to her ring hand, to make space for her wedding band!
  • After the wedding: the bride can slip back her engagement ring onto her left hand, to join her newly added wedding band.

In Germany and Austria

In Germany and Austria, things are slightly more complicated:

  • On the proposal day: the engagement ring is slipped onto the left hand´s ring finger.
  • On wedding day - down the aisle: the wedding band is worn onto the right hand´s ring finger. Here again, the etiquette requires that the bride have a "free" hand for her groom to slip the wedding band onto. This means that the bride would leave her engagement ring on her left hand during the wedding ceremony.
  • After the wedding: the engagement ring is now moved to the right hand, to join her newly added wedding band.

The tradition of stacking engagement ring and wedding band

If you wish to follow the etiquette, or simply want to wear your engagement ring and your wedding band together, you may want to search for an engagement ring that can "touch" your wedding band, for a clean and polished look.
