One of Britain’s oldest farmers beams with joy as he hugs his wife at Buckingham Palace.

It was a rare trip to London this week for Steve Green, 90, and his wife Jean, 67 – and they lapped up every minute of it.

For once the hard-working couple, who rarely leave their North Yorkshire farm, could swap their daily chores for the delights of the capital.

As guests of the Sunday People they had tea at the Ritz and went to see Buck House.

The couple found fame when on Channel 5’s The Yorkshire Vet and in March renewed their wedding vows on the show. And we published their story.

The self-sufficient pair were excited about their big day out as they approached the Ritz, near Piccadilly Circus.

When Jean spotted a 25ft Christmas tree in the lobby she joked: “Hell, look at all those lights, Steve. It’s fantastic. It’s like Piccadilly Circus.”

Jean was wearing only a thin gilet over a fun T-shirt with a “give peas a chance” logo but said: “This isn’t cold.”

It was a different world from their farm in Thirsk 225 miles away where there are no mod cons and Steve still works 18 hour a days from 6am.

It has been home for 75 years to Steve, who found love with Jean in his 50s. Their daughter Sarah, 35, lives with them.

The couple chop their own logs for fuel, grow all their food and look after calves, donkeys, one dog and 19 cats.

They have never used the internet and before this year the farthest they had travelled was 50 miles to Whitby for their honeymoon four decades ago. But the Greens’ TV appearance made them overnight celebrities.

And next week fans will see their very first trip to London, in May, to visit The Donkey Sanctuary Garden at The Chelsea Flower Show with Yorkshire Vet star Peter Wright and his wife Lin.

But this week’s visit was all about relaxing, and the Greens tucked into finger sandwiches, cakes, tea and scones with cream at the Ritz.

When asked which has been his favourite decade Steve immediately replied.

“This one, so far. I’m here with my wife. It doesn’t get better than this.”

Jean said: “We’re more in love now than ever. Since being on the show we’ve made so many new friends. We’ve been able to do things we’ve always dreamt of, like this, which is wonderful.”

As fans of the Queen they were thrilled to see the Palace.

True to himself, Steve said: “It must take some heating.”
