How many German consulates are there in the USA? ›

The missions abroad represent our country, defend its interests and protect German citizens in host countries. The missions can be called Germany's eyes, ears and voice abroad. On instructions from the Federal Foreign Office, they represent our country, defend its interests and protect its citizens in the host country.

In 2004 the United States resumed diplomatic relations with the Iraqi Interim Government and established a new Embassy in Baghdad's fortified Green Zone. This new Embassy is the largest embassy in the world.

Missions in New York City

There are 116 missions in the city. All are consulates-general unless otherwise noted.

German saboteurs landed. They were not regular Army (Wehrmacht) troops. There were four (4) who came ashore from a U-boat near Amagansett, Long Island, New York. Another four landed far to the south, near Jacksonville, FL.

The United States Department of War designated three locations as POW camps during the war: Fort McPherson and Fort Oglethorpe in Georgia and Douglas in Utah.

Nearly 400,0000 German war prisoners landed on American shores between 1942 and 1945, after their capture in Europe and North Africa. They bunked in U.S. Army barracks and hastily constructed camps across the country, especially in the South and Southwest.

Every German Mission in the U.S. requires that you schedule an appointment via the Online Appointment System for the application of a visa, a passport or identification card.

To apply for reclaiming your German citizenship by descent, you must: Submit your birth certificate and/or your ancestors' birth certificates. You must prove the link between yourself and your ancestors. Submit any other documents that prove your eligibility for German citizenship, such as old German passports.

The Federal Republic of Germany manages 227 diplomatic missions abroad. Of these, 153 are embassies, 52 consulates-general, 7 consulates, and 12 multilateral missions making it one of the world's largest diplomatic networks. In addition, there are 337 honorary consuls, which are not included in this list.

The embassy is the official representation of the Federal Government of Germany in the United States. Our Visa, Passport and Legal Section provides services for US residents and German citizens within the Embassy's area of consular jurisdiction: Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.

The American Embassy in Berlin oversees all of the American diplomatic functions in Germany, including the American consulates in Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Leipzig, and Munich.
