Frequently asked questions

What is home contents insurance?

Home contents insurance cushions financial setbacks in the event of damage to your household effects in the Netherlands. This may include damage caused by fire, smoke, soot, storm, theft or vandalism. Everything must be replaced in such an event and these costs can pile up quickly.

It is not mandatory to take out home contents insurance in the Netherlands. You decide whether you want to insure your household effects. Nevertheless, taking out home contents insurance is a smart move. If something does happen, the financial consequences can be immense.

See what we can do for you when you have a claim.

Are my solar panels and charging station also insured?

Are you a tenant of a house or owner of an apartment? Then solar panels, charging stations, wind turbines and heat pumps and the associated cables installed at your expense are covered if they are attached to your home or are in the yard of your home. They must always be securely fastened or anchored. Solar panels may also be weighted on a flat roof. In other cases you will need home insurance for this.

Are smoke detectors mandatory?

Since 1 July 2022, it has been mandatory to have smoke detectors in your home. They warn you straight away when there is a fire, so you can take immediate action.

The government and your insurance company do not check whether you have smoke detectors inside your home. If anyone calls on you pretending to be a smoke detector inspector, do not let them in. This is a door-to-door scam by a scammer trying to gain access to your home to steal money or belongings.

If you have incurred damage and your home has no smoke detectors, this will not affect your claim. ABN AMRO Verzekeringen will not invoke the lack of smoke detectors in the event of a claim. But it is a smart idea to install them for your own safety and to protect your home and belongings. If you are a landlord, however, you will be liable for the consequences as well as liable to prosecution if there is a home fire and you had no smoke detectors installed.

Does the insurance carry an excess?

You will only have to pay an excess in the event of:

  • Damage from rainfall or overflowing water, such as a leaking water pipe: €220
  • Storm damage: €220 for tenant's or owner's fixtures and fittings. For example, if you rent your house or if you have your own flat. You will have an excess in the event of damage to any improvements you have made to your home. These are improvements that you cannot take with you when you move house

If you select all-risk cover when applying for the policy, you will have an excess of €100 for specific all-risk claims. This excess also applies to the additional all-risk cover for mobile devices and personal possessions.

In addition, you can select a voluntary excess of €100, €250 or €500. This additional excess applies per incident. You will receive a discount on your premium, but you will also receive less compensation in the event of a claim. If you apply for home contents insurance online, you will not receive an offer for a voluntary excess. However, you can select this after the application process is complete. You will receive more information on this.
