Each year, the Met Gala is one of the most exclusive events in art and fashion with guests ranging from reality TV stars to musicians, and even the occasional royal family member.
While you must be invited personally by Vogue director Anna Wintour, that doesn’t mean you don’t have to purchase a ticket first.
The Met Gala was first founded in 1946 and the first major event was held in 1948. Since then, the gala has become a fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Costume Institution located in New York City.

How much do Met Gala tickets cost?
Seemingly due to inflation, the Met Gala saw a major price increase this year. According to Page Six, the cost of an individual ticket jumped from $30,000 to $50,000 for the 2023 event.
Despite the hefty price, individuals invited seem to have no hesitation in paying for a ticket.
“For every person that decides not to go [because of the steep cost], 20 people will line up behind them and beg to come,” a source told the outlet.
Does every guest pay for a ticket?
Surprisingly, not every guest attending the gala will have to pay for their own ticket. Sometimes big fashion brands and companies will purchase full tables which cost at least $275,000, and invite celebrities to walk the red carpet in their designs.
Sometimes, Anna Wintour will even invite up-and-coming designers and allow them to attend without paying the ticket price.
How easy is it to purchase a ticket?
Attending the Met Gala isn’t as simple as buying a ticket. All attendees are hand selected by Anna Wintour, and there is quite the waitlist.
“I’ve known of society names who couldn’t get a ticket and are prepped to go if there’s a last-minute seat that becomes available,” vintage store owner Cameron Silver, who has attended the event several times, revealed to Page Six in 2017.
“They have their look ready even if they aren’t certain of whether they will actually have a seat days before the event,” she explained.
