Battle Tips vs. Volo and Giratina

  • Make sure you have at least five Max Revives, just in case, along with plenty of Max Potions. You will need to use these during battle.
  • Togekiss is strong and fast, but a Special Defense tank like Blissey (equipped with Thunder Bolt and Draining Kiss) or Snorlax will be able to survive a few turns, giving you a chance to use a Max Revive or Max Potion.
  • If you know your Pokemon can one-shot your opponent but has the opportunity to move twice, take free turn to use a Max Revive or Max Potion.
  • Know that Volo will use a Full Restore if his Pokemon's health is reduced enough
  • Volo always starts with Spiritomb, so make sure your lead Pokemon has a strong Fairy-type move to take it out.
  • As you can see, Volo's team is extremely varied, and he is equipped to counter just about any Pokemon. He may knock out your Pokemon before you even get the chance to switch, which is why a varied team is crucial.

Best Team Against Volo

The best team against Volo has Pokemon of at least Level 68 with moves that can reliably one-shot a few of Volo's Pokemon, but also stand up to Giratina. You won't be able to sweep Volo with just one Pokemon because of how the battle system works. Having a mixed team that features Pokemon with Fairy, Ice, and Ground-type moves (at minimum) will prove most beneficial in this battle and beyond. You also want to make sure you have a tank, like Blissey, so it can survive a few turns to allow you to heal and Max Revive your Pokemon.

Tip: Catch an Alpha Garchomp

This is a little cheesy, but you can catch and use a Level 85 Alpha Garchomp in the Alabaster Icelands as long as you're Star Rank 7. It will still get taken down by Togekiss, and take severe damage from others, but it's a great asset against Hisuian Arcanine, Lucario, and even Volo's own Garchomp. It will also deal great damage to Giratina - just make sure it knows Bulldoze, Dragon Claw, and Outrage. Teach it Fire Fang and it can take out Roserade, too!

Our recommendation for this fight is to take in the Pokemon you picked up while collecting the plates, as well as Dialga and Palkia. Cresselia, Heatran and Regigigas will all be able to deliver Super Effective blows for different rounds. Cresselia will be useful against both Spiritomb and Roserade, while Heatran will prove useful against Togekiss, Hisuian Arcanine, Roserade and Lucario. Finally, Dialga or Palkia will be best suited against Garchomp. Fairy-type Pokemon, like Alolan Ninetales (see How to Get Alolan Vulpix), Clefable, and Sylveon, would also be useful.
Regardless of who you bring, consider using Grit items to increase their Effort Levels, and teaching them diversified moves at the Training Grounds so they can cover a wide range of Volo's Pokemon. He and Giratina won’t react the same exact way every time, either, so it’s best to be prepared for anything. Make sure to master their moves by using Seed of Mastery so you can react more flexibly in battle with Agile and Strong-style, too.

After the Battle With Volo

After you beat Volo, it's not long before you’re joined by Giratina. Unfortunately, your Pokemon will not be healed before this battle, so the progress you make and the Pokemon you lose during the first battle with Volo will carry over for this one.

How to Beat Giratina

Because so much of the battle against Volo affects how you'll do in the battle against Giratina, the team you take in for the first fight will prove crucial here. If you've taken in the recommended team and are at the level we've suggested, it should mean that it's just a case of learning which Pokemon to deploy in which order, and the attacks that Giratina can deliver.
Giratina is a Ghost- and Dragon-type Pokemon, and is weak to Dark, Fairy, Ice, Ghost- and Dragon-type attacks. Cresselia that we mentioned earlier, will be able to deliver a Fairy-type Moonblast attack that is Super Effective against Giratina. If you use Heatran, which you picked up during The Plate of Firespit Islands, you can also use the Dark-type Crunch move that will be Super Effective. Both Dialga and Palkia will be able to use their Dragon-type attacks during this battle, as well, which will also be Super Effective.

Cresselia is good to start the battle with, using Moonblast in strong style to hit Giratina's health bar significantly. This can also reduce Giratina's offensive stats. Giratina will obscure itself, however, making it more difficult to land those attacks and will start to use Shadow Force, which is an extremely powerful attack. To keep Cresselia in the fight, it's best to use health items when Giratina obscures itself. If you're loaded up with Max Potions, you should be able to see this fight out with just Cresselia, but if you do lose her, then throw out another one of your Pokemon to deliver the final blows.

Battling Giratina for the Second Time

When you've beaten Giratina, it will take its second form... and you'll have to fight it all over again. If you lost any Pokemon in the previous round, you should still have some strong fighters you can use for this battle. Dialga and Palkia are both strong options, with their Dragon-type moves Roar of Time and Spacial Rend doing significant amounts of damage (especially if you've mastered their moves and can switch them to strong style). With these Pokemon, it should take a few hits to finish off Giratina.
