Is null a good idea? ›

When a variable or object reference is set to null , it means it does not point to any valid object or value. This can cause runtime errors such as NullReferenceExceptions, and is a common source of bugs in software development.

In all modern character sets, the null character has a code point value of zero. In most encodings, this is translated to a single code unit with a zero value. For instance, in UTF-8 it is a single zero byte. However, in Modified UTF-8 the null character is encoded as two bytes: 0xC0,0x80.

A NULL value is a special marker used in SQL to indicate that a data value does not exist in the database. In other words, it is just a placeholder to denote values that are missing or that we do not know. NULL can be confusing and cumbersome at first. But it is imperative for any analyst to know how to handle them.

Etymo: Latin nullus "not any, none," from ne- "not, no" (see un-) + illus "any," dim. of unus "one." Semantically: Very difficult. In most cases, NULL or nil means "no value" or "not applicable". Sometimes (like, when passed to a routine as an argument) it means "no explicit value".

Null is a special instruction in the language that can substitute any type. Put in another way; it means that null inherits from all reference types. Because of that, you cannot think of your code logically anymore. You always have to check if the value is of subtype null or not.

Using NULL values in your database is a permanent choice. Once you choose to allow them, you need to allow NULLs in all SQL database tables. Relational databases include NULLs by default, but they all let you reject NULLs should you decide to require developers to enter a value.

The exception can be eliminated by testing whether the element is null before performing any operation on that element, as the following example shows. A NullReferenceException exception can be thrown by a method when it accesses a member of one of its arguments, but that argument is null .

Null means having no value; in other words null is zero, like if you put so little sugar in your coffee that it's practically null. Null also means invalid, or having no binding force. The problem with NULL is that it is a non-value value, a sentinel, a special case that was lumped in with everything else. Instead, we need an entity that contains information about (1) whether it contains a value and (2) the contained value, if it exists.

The answer to that is rather simple: a NULL means that there is no value, we're looking at a blank/empty cell, and 0 means the value itself is 0.

The Disadvantages of NULL

The first one is that NULL is considered a variable-length value. This means that it could be a few bytes or several bytes. The database leaves room for extra bytes should the value be larger than what is stored in the field.

NULL is used when some fields are optional, and the data is unknown.

It's very tempting to just return a null reference, but this could cause problems for the caller. If the caller(or callers), fails to do a null check, it could result in a NullPointerException being thrown if some value from the item object is used.
