Using medical data, INSIDER calculated average height figures for the 25 shortest countries.

25-year-old Junrey Balawing from the Philippines was awarded the title of world's smallest living man in September 2015. He is just 59.9cm (1 foot 11.58 inches) tall.
Although he is the most extreme example, he is part of a broader scientific phenomenon: Filipinos are among the shortest people on earth.
INSIDER compiled a ranking of average height data from a medical database run by NCD Risk Factor Collaboration, a project linked to Imperial College London.
It lists separate figures for male and female height in each country — we took an average of these two figures to give a rough idea of how tall the average person is in the country, and also listed the separate male and female figures.

25. Sri Lanka — 160.12cm (5 feet 3.04 inches)

The average Sri Lankan is 160.12cm (5 feet 3.04 inches) tall.
The average man in Sri Lanka is 165.68cm (5 feet 5.23 inches) tall.
The average woman in Sri Lanka is 154.56cm (5 feet 0.85 inches) tall.
24. Honduras — 160.11cm (5 feet 3.03 inches)

The average Honduran man is 166.39cm (5 feet 5.50 inches) tall.
The average Honduran woman is 153.84cm (5.056 inches) tall.
The shortest tribe are the Mbutsi people from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with an average height of 1.37 m (4 ft 6 in) for men and 1.35 m (4 ft 5 in) for women, with some groups averaging only 1.32 m (4 ft 4 in) for men and 1.24 m (4 ft 1 in) for women.
Chandra Bahadur Dangi (30 November 1939 – 3 September 2015) (Nepali: चन्द्रबहादुर डाँगी, pronounced [t͡sʌndrʌˈbʌɦadur ˈɖãŋɡi], or [t͡sʌndraˈbaːdur ˈɖãŋɡi] ( listen)) was a Nepali man who was the shortest man in recorded history measuring 54.6 cm (1 ft 91⁄2 in). Dangi was a primordial dwarf.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the average age-adjusted height for American men 20 years and older is is 69.1 inches (175.4 cm), or 5 feet 9 inches tall, and the average height of an American female over 20 years of age is 63.5 inches (161.5 cm), or 5' 3.5" tall.
Latvian women are the tallest on the planet, with an average height of 170cm. * The top four tallest countries for men are the Netherlands, Belgium, Estonia and Latvia. The top four tallest countries for women are Latvia, the Netherlands, Estonia and the Czech Republic.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, short stature means an estimated final height below 5 feet 3 inches for boys or 4 feet 11 inches for girls. The average height in the United States is 5 feet 8 inches for men and 5 feet 4 inches for women.
Since ancient times the Mediterranean island of Sardinia has been known for harboring a population with an average body height shorter than almost every other ethnic group in Europe.
Ethnicity is an important factor determining the height of an individual. Ethnically different populations might respond differently to the same environmental factors and thus the final height in different ethnic groups is different. Height is a polygenic trait with a high degree of heritability.

Being short is not generally considered a disability. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), for a person to qualify as disabled, they need to have an impairment that creates great obstacles in completing and participating in major life activities.

Hawaii has the shortest average height among both men and women. This can be attributed to the race factor previously mentioned. Hawaii's population is less than one-third Black or white.
