(Reverse) Sally McCoy contracted measles and pneumonia, and died a few months after her birth. The death of Roseanna McCoy's only child, Sally, was a contributing factor in the grief and sorrow that led to the untimely death of Roseanna. Sally was laid to rest in the cemetery at top of hill.

In spite of Hatfield-McCoy hostilities, Roseanna McCoy fell in love with Johnse Hatfield during a passionate encounter at the Spring election of 1880. Johnse was known for being a romantic, and fixated his attention on the beautiful Roseanna, despite the potential consequences of their relationship.

Hopeless and pregnant, she went back to the father who considered her ride an unforgivable sin. There, amid hostility and shame, she contracted measles and miscarried her child. To add to her heartbreak, Johnse married Roseanna's 16-year-old cousin, Nancy McCoy, only months later, on May 14, 1881.

Von Hippel-Lindau disease, which afflicts many family members, can cause tumors in the eyes, ears, pancreas, kidney, brain and spine. Roughly three-fourths of the affected McCoys have tumors of the adrenal gland. There is no cure for the disease, but removing the tumors before they turn cancerous can improve survival.

Historical Marker #1728 marks Dils Cemetery in Pikeville. Dils Cemetery is the resting place of Randolph and Sarah McCoy, as well as their daughter, Roseanna, son, Sam, and Sam's wife, Martha. Each of these McCoys had their lives shaped by the feud with the Hatfield clan.

Sarah Elizabeth, “l*ttle Sally,” was the daughter of Roseanna McCoy and Johnse Hatfield. She was born in the spring of 1881 and died when she was only eight months old.

The families lived on opposite sides of a border stream, the Tug Fork—the McCoys in Pike county, Kentucky, and the Hatfields in Logan county (or Mingo county, formed from a portion of Logan county in 1895), West Virginia. Each had numerous kinfolk and allies in the respective counties in which they lived.

The feudal families Hatfield and McCoy became famous for a nearly three-decades-long feud (1863- 1891). Both families largely fought in the Civil War in support of Jefferson Davis's Confederate South, and both families had land in Kentucky and West Virginia.

Since birth, Elijah McCoy had an affinity for things of a mechanical nature. In his lifetime, McCoy held over 57 patents was best known for his “Improvement in Lubricators for Steam-Engines” patented in 1872.

The Hatfield–McCoy Feud involved two American families of the West Virginia–Kentucky area along the Tug Fork of the Big Sandy River from 1863 to 1891.
