Sociopath Profile: Arthur Fleck (1)

Alias: Joker
From the 2019 film Joker
Played by Joaquin Phoenix
Requested by an anon

While different from several other versions of the Joker with his sympathetic qualities throughout most of the film, Arthur falls into a sociopathic mindset by the end of the film. Once he becomes the Clown Prince of Crime, he fully embraces this mindset.

(NOTE: As I point out many times on the profiles, this isn’t a diagnosis, only a character analysis. I definitely know that he might not genuinely be considered a sociopath, but as far as the character-type goes, he ends up filling enough of the requirements.)

[SPOILERS BELOW]

For starters, Arthur ends up realizing that he doesn’t feel bad about the Wall Street Three. While the first two could be argued as self-defense, the third was an outright execution. While he was scared at first, he calmed himself down and ended up not caring about them at all. He was proud enough to actually admit it on live television. And he laughs off the death of one person and two cops getting critically injured as a result of something he did.

Cop 1: Stop laughing, you freak. This isn’t funny.
Cop 2: Yeah, the whole f*cking city’s on fire because of what you did.
Joker: I know. Isn’t it beautiful?

Because of the continuous abuse that he suffers from everyone around him, Arthur starts only consider the pain he has incurred thanks to what has happened to him. He begins to justify his several killings which become even less justifiable as the film goes on. He has only hurt people who have wronged him, but the punishment doesn’t ultimately fit the crime when we finally get to Murray’s murder.

Ultimately, Joker only cares about himself. He just wanted to be noticed. He wanted some affection and as people become more harsh towards him, he’s more desperate to get it. Since the fact that Arthur didn’t get noticed but Joker did, he decided to become Joker and embrace the adoration of the rioters.

And while Arthur’s social skills leave much to be desired, Joker’s bombastic showmanship makes him the superficially charming kind of guy that he is in most mediums. He knows how to deliver a joke with some charm (even if he can’t truly tell one to save his life). When he finally becomes comfortable with the persona, he starts talking in a rather hammy way, befitting the showman he aspires to be.

Thanks to his other disorders, he’s very disconnected from others. It is possible this comes from schizotypal personality disorder rather than antisocial. However, he moves from trying to understand how to function in society to actively fighting it. Arthur actively revels in the destruction of society. He watches the riots around Gotham from the back seat of the police car with adoration. He fully believes that everything that happens to Gotham, it brought it upon itself.

“YOU GET WHAT YOU f*ckIN’ DESERVE!”

Arthur even has moments when he just starts adding insult to injury. When he kills Randall, he starts making jokes with Gary while the man is laying dead right next to him and Arthur has blood on his face. He lets him go because he was nice to him, but he still tries to scare him when he walks past, showing a whimsical attitude towards death. When Garrity and Burke are attacked, he just lifts his mask and dances in front of them smugly while they’re piled on by rioters. After he kills Murray, he shoots him again for sh*ts and giggles before tossing the gun on the desk and dancing up to steal Murray’s catchphrase.

With the path that Arthur is on by the end of the movie, there is no doubt that he will become the recognizable sociopathic Joker.
