Stop Income Tax Procrastination (2024)

Stop Income Tax Procrastination (1)In today’s video, I wanted to focus on a timely topic given that it’s personal income tax time for many people around the world right now (well, maybe not everywhere but in North America it is). And the topic is procrastinating on
getting your income tax return done on time!

I know for myself, I used to procrastinate in getting my tax return completed before the deadline and in fact, one year (many years ago) I didn’t even file but instead, filed two returns the following year.

For the last several years, my husband has been running a business as a housepainter. So, he always has a lot of receipts that he just collects in a shoe box through the year. And there’s a lot that has to be done to sort through everything, get the receipts organized and add them up.

I literally have at least 1,000 receipts to sort through every year between paint store receipts, hardware store receipts, gas receipts and more. It takes me 2-3 full days to go through it all and another day to sort through
my own receipts so that we can bring everything to the accountant.

In any case, when tax season comes I am now very good about getting down tobusiness and getting it done and over with. But I know that a lot of people agonize over their income taxes, especially if they are self-employed and
they put off getting it done because they are busy and because it’s not muchfun!

Further, self-employed business owners often worry about what they might owethe tax man and so they put off getting the return completed. It’s like they are trying to avoid the pain that they know is inevitable but instead, it
causes them even more pain because they know they have to do it.

I know what it’s like because I used to feel the same way but many years ago, I tapped on the procrastination and all the feelings that came up about money during this time of year and now I don’t even procrastinate anymore. I just
go ahead and get it done. I don’t dread tax season any more, I don’t put it off, I just do it. And, this past year, I played some fun music on my iPhone while I was working away and it made this task even easier for me.

So why not make the process easier on yourself so that you can get your income taxes done with a lot less stress and more ease.

Let’s start on the karate chop point…

Even though it’s income tax season and I’m dreading it, I really hate sortingthrough everything for my income taxes, it’s just a big job that’s boring and that makes me anxious, I deeply and completely accept myself.

Even though during tax season there’s a lot of sorting I have to do, there’s a lot of receipts I need to go through, it’s boring and I don’t have time for it, it makes me anxious because I wonder how much I’m going to owe, I chooseto let all these negative emotions go and just get ‘er done.

Even though tax time fills me with dread because it’s one of those “have to do” tasks that I just don’t want to do, it’s boring, it fills me with dread, makes me anxious, it doesn’t have to be that way and I choose to let go of these negative emotions now.

This dread during tax time
I dread tax time
It’s such a big chore
It makes me anxious
I find myself proscratinating
I just don’t want to do it
Why do I have to do this?

And then I wonder how much I’m going to owe at the end of this whole process
And that makes me even more anxious
But what if I’m getting money back
That’s exciting
I might actually get some money back
Or not have to pay as much as I’m anticipating
But either way, I have to file a tax return

So I might as well get ‘er done
And I’ll feel better once it’s done
I know I’ll feel much better once this task gets done
And maybe I can make it fun
Maybe I can get the kids involved
In sorting through receipts
And organizing things into piles

And I can put some fun music on
Because I’m going to have to do it anyways
And, it’s not a good idea to file a late return
Better to get it done on time
Better not put it off until the last minute
Because it’s just going to cause me more stress
But I just don’t want to do it

I’m choosing to release these resistant emotions now
I might as well just get it done
I choose to just get my income tax chore done
Get it done and out of the way
And then I don’t have to worry about it
Or, if I’m just feeling
Way too overwhelmed

I can always pay my accountant to sort through all my receipts for me
There’s going to be a cost to that
But it is an option
And if I’m not willing to pay taht fee
For my accountant to do all the sorting and adding up for me
Then I might as well just go ahead and do it myself
It won’t be so bad once I get going

I’ll start picking up momentum
And I’ll probably get it done quicker than I think
So I choose to just get ‘er done
And focus on how good it will feel to get it done
Get all done and out of the way
I’m choosing to release this resistance now
Releasing all this resistance around doing my income tax return

Take a nice deep breath and let it out.

Hopefully you feel a little more motivated about tackling the income tax chore. I know that in the past I use to leave it until the last minute but now I’ve got everything all done and ready for the accountant well ahead of the deadline to file a return (which is the end of April).

The only task I have left to do with respect to our income tax returns is to contact our accountant and make an appointment. So, just get it out of the way, put on some fun music and you’ll feel much better once you get it out of the way.
