With 1.3 billion speakers worldwide, English takes the title as the most spoken language in the world. It also takes the crown as the language with the most spoken words, with around 600,000 words used in the language.
Urdu, predominantly spoken in India and Pakistan, comes in second place, with around 264,000 words spoken in the language, spoken by around 264 million people.
The second most spoken language in the world, Mandarin Chinese, has around 85,568 words spoken in the language. The words are made up of characters known as Hanzi, the oldest used system of writing in the world.
Portuguese comes in third place as the language with the most words, with around 228,500, spoken predominantly in Portugal and Brazil and Mozambique and Angola.
Hindi and Russian are both tied at around 150,000 words each, with Russian having 258 million speakers worldwide, and Hindi having over double that at 600 million.
