The front of the Waltons Hamner House in Nelson County, Va. (Gayle Harvey Real Estate, Inc.) NELSON COUNTY, Va. (WSET) - A trio of fans bought the Nelson County home that was the inspiration for the show "The Waltons."

Popularly known as The Waltons House, the Hamner House is the childhood home of Earl Hamner, Jr., novelist and creator of the TV series, The Waltons and was listed in the Virginia Landmarks Register in 2004. The Walton Hamner House is open seven days a week and guided tours begin every half hour from 10am until 4pm.

Located twenty-five miles south of Charlottesville in the foothills of Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountain range you will find the small hamlet of Schuyler.

On the back lot of the Warner Brothers film studios in Burbank, California, is where the iconic exterior shots were filmed. And, how the house was arranged isn't at all what we would have guessed. Judy Norton, who played Mary Ellen Walton on the show, recently revealed just how the sound stage was set up.

You can purchase tickets for tours of the home at the Walton's Mountain Museum in Schuyler. Three longtime fans of the popular TV show "The Waltons" have purchased the Virginia childhood home of the show's creator in an effort to keep it open to the public.

“Many of the places mentioned on the series actually do exist in Schuyler.” While filmed on location in California, the fictional Walton family would have been at home in the tiny town of about 300 residents 40 minutes southwest of Charlottesville, Va., in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

In addition to the Walton characters, other roles, such as the “recipe-making” Baldwin sisters and General Store owner, Ike Godsey were also inspired by real people.

The main story is set in Walton's Mountain, a fictional mountain community in the fictitious Jefferson County, Virginia. The real place upon which the stories are based is the community of Schuyler in Nelson County, Virginia.

Rockfish was frequently referenced in the CBS television series The Waltons as being the closest town to Waltons Mountain, the fictional version of the nearby community of Schuyler.

“The Homecoming” is based on actual happenings in the Hamner household on Christmas Eve 1938, when Earl Jr. was 15. The Depression had forced his father to work at a factory 40 miles from home. Earl Sr.'s worried clan waited and waited--wife Doris, Earl Jr.

The character Jim Bob had one ambition: to learn to fly an airplane. While he was medically unfit for the Air Corps, in the final movies he had indeed become a pilot, flying crop dusting and charter flights. The only sibling on the series who had his own room in the house was John-Boy.
