The Walton's made use of many period appropriate buildings, sets and locations. While Walton's Mountain is not a real place in name it represents the small community of Schuyler, Virginia where the show creator, Earl Hamner grew up. Towns like Charlottesville and cities like Richmond depicted in the show are in fact real places located in Virginia and there inclusion helped to blur the lines between the reality and fiction of Earl Hamner's experiences while growing up in Virginia.
