There "was no choice" but to kill off Power's Raina (2024)

Power creator Courtney A Kemp has said there was "no choice" but to kill off Raina.

Season four of the hit series saw the shock death of Ghost's daughter Raina because of her twin brother Tariq's past with dirty undercover cop Ray Ray.

As Ray Ray looked to sew up loose ends by tracking down Tariq, he found Raina, and while Tariq hid, her confrontation with Ray Ray led to her death.

And it seems, despite the distress of fans, the decision was rather inevitable.

"In the case [of Raina], I felt like there was no choice," Kemp told The Hollywood Reporter.

"My show is governed by the principle of surprising and inevitable, so the dominos have to fall a certain way. The character's twin brother had committed a series of acts for which, in their world, you get 'got'.

"So then his sister, being a white hat in our show, tries to save her brother from his fate and, as a result of him making these choices, she is the one who gets hurt.

"That is surprising because it's not him, but it's inevitable because he made some terrible choices."

Naturi Naughton, who plays Raina's mother Tasha, has previously teased "next level drama" in the forthcoming fifth season.

"I don't know what I can tell you without giving too much away," Naturi told The Shade Room. "Just expect a lot of drama, a lot of pain. My daughter's dead. A lot of fighting between Tasha and Ghost.

"It's about to be like next level drama and I think this season is our best season yet. "

Power is expected to return later this year.
