As far as universities go, I would argue that UCL is the best London university based on its performance and rankings as a multi-faculty university. On its part, LSE may be a specialist institution, but it is truly a behemoth in the social sciences field. To what extent one would consider law as a ‘social science’ is a moot point, especially considering that many league table rankings go to the trouble of ranking law separately.
In terms of prestige, I think LSE has better brand recognition internationally, but in the UK legal market, I would say that UCL and LSE are on equal footing. Besides, in both domestic and international law rankings, there’s hardly much to differentiate LSE and UCL; at times UCL is ranked higher by a few places and at times LSE is ranked higher by a few places. This may be an unwarranted comparison, but perhaps if one were to be confined to study in London, choosing to study law at either UCL or LSE is akin to choosing between Oxford and Cambridge. Basically, you cannot go wrong with either and it all boils down to personal preference.
What most people would agree on is that KCL, whilst a very good choice for law as well, is somewhat perceived to be behind both UCL and LSE. Some may indeed prefer KCL to LSE or UCL, say for KCL’sstrength in competition law, but again that’s quite subjective. It depends on how one wants to structure their LLM as well.
