The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam is one of the most popular museums in the world. It houses the biggest collection of Van Gogh’s work in a modern, recently refurbished building in Amsterdam’s Museum Square. With over 2.3 million visitors in 2017 alone, the permanent collection, temporary exhibitions and workshops all keep visitors coming back every year.

The permanent collection includes one of the most famous paintings in the world – Van Gogh’s Sunflowers. It also chronicles the different phases of his short artistic life. From his earlier, darker work from Nuenen and Antwerp, to his more modernist-inspired, colourful pieces from Paris and beyond.

The Van Gogh Museum is also home to restoration and research facilities that shine more light on Van Gogh’s life and give you insight into how he worked. You can also learn more about the restoration process as well as the conservation work that goes on.

Not only for adults, the museum is also popular with kids who can attend fun and interactive art workshops at the museum. It’s also open late every Friday, attracting a younger crowd with its DJs and musicians until 9 pm closing time.

Sunflowers is Van Gogh’s famous still life painting from 1889. This iconic work of art was created while the artist was living in the south of France. Created in addition to a series of sunflower paintings he’d created in Paris a couple of years prior, this piece was made to impress his soon-to-be housemate and fellow artist Gauguin. You can find this world-famous artwork hanging in the Rietveld building of the Van Gogh Museum.
