What Is a Solution? (1)
What Is a Solution?

A solution is a hom*ogeneous mixture of one or more solutes dissolved in a solvent.

  • solvent: the substance in which a solute dissolves to produce a hom*ogeneous mixture
  • solute: the substance that dissolves in a solvent to produce a hom*ogeneous mixture

Note that the solvent is the substance that is present in the greatest amount.

Many different kinds of solutions exist. For example, a solute can be a gas, a liquid or a solid. Solvents can also be gases, liquids or solids.

The following figures show the microscopic behavior of several different kinds of solutions. Note that in each case, the solute particles are uniformly distributed among the solvent particles.

FAQs

What is a solution in science? ›

A solution, in science, refers to a type of mixture involving two or more substances. Specifically, the solution definition refers to a type of hom*ogeneous mixture - i.e., a mixture that has a uniform composition and its individual components cannot be distinguished.

What is a solution in short answer? ›

A solution is a hom*ogeneous mixture of one or more solutes dissolved in a solvent. solvent: the substance in which a solute dissolves to produce a hom*ogeneous mixture. solute: the substance that dissolves in a solvent to produce a hom*ogeneous mixture.

What are solutions in simple terms? ›

A solution is a hom*ogeneous mixture of two or more components in which the particle size is smaller than 1 nm. Common examples of solutions are sugar in water and salt in water solutions, soda water, etc. In a solution, all the components appear as a single phase.

Why is a solution in chemistry? ›

solution, in chemistry, a hom*ogenous mixture of two or more substances in relative amounts that can be varied continuously up to what is called the limit of solubility. The term solution is commonly applied to the liquid state of matter, but solutions of gases and solids are possible.

What are 5 examples of solutions? ›

Examples of Solutions

Sugar-water, salt solution, brass, alloys, alcohol in water, aerosol, air, aerated drinks such as Coca-Cola etc. are examples of solutions.

What is the simple definition of solute? ›

A solute is a solid, liquid, or gas which is dissolved to make a solution. A solute is dissolved in a solvent to make a solution. A solute is a component of a solution which is present in a small amount relative to the solvent.

What is solution in short words? ›

: an action or process of solving a problem. b. : an answer to a problem : explanation. specifically : a set of values of the variables that satisfies an equation.

What is one solution example? ›

Linear Equations with One Solution Examples

Example 1: Consider the equation 7x – 35 = 0. On solving we have 7x = 35 or x = 5. The above linear equation is only true if x = 5 and hence the given linear equation has only one solution i.e. x = 5.

What is a solution for dummies? ›

A solution is a mixture of two or more substances that stays evenly mixed. Substances that are combined to form a solution do not change into new substances.

What are basic solutions? ›

A basic solution is an aqueous solution with a higher concentration of OH-ions than H+ions. To put it another way, it's an aqueous solution with a pH greater than 7. Acidic pH is below 7, neutral pH is 7, and basic pH is above 7. pH is the hydrogen ion concentrations, so the pH range of bases are 7-14.

What is a solution in a problem? ›

A solution to a problem or difficult situation is a way of dealing with it so that the difficulty is removed. Although he has sought to find a peaceful solution, he is facing pressure to use greater military force. Synonyms: answer, resolution, key, result More Synonyms of solution.

What is a solution in chemistry simple? ›

A solution is a hom*ogeneous mixture of two or more substances. A solution may exist in any phase. A solution consists of a solute and a solvent. The solute is the substance that is dissolved in the solvent. The amount of solute that can be dissolved in solvent is called its solubility.

What is a solution in mixtures? ›

The solution is a type of mixture where two or more components are dissolved i.e, the solute is dissolved in a solvent. Before diving into the differences, it is important to understand and remember that a solution is a type of mixture but a mixture may or may not be a solution.

What makes up a solution? ›

Solutions are hom*ogeneous mixtures containing two or more substances called the solute and solvent. The solute is the substance that dissolves. The solvent is the dissolving medium. When looking at a solution it is impossible to distinguish the solute from the solvent.
