What we know about Encanto 2 (2024)

Encanto 2 has yet to be officially confirmed by Disney, but recent developments at the House of Mouse might have given fans hope that we'll all be talking about Bruno again (if we even stopped).

In February 2023, Disney confirmed sequels for Toy Story, Frozen and Zootopia. Encanto might not have been a billion-dollar smash like some of those movies, but it's only grown in popularity since its cinema release in November 2021.

If Disney is looking to its back catalogue for more sequels to established hits, then there's every chance that Encanto could get a sequel. Of course, nothing has been confirmed and we might just be getting carried away, but there's no harm in speculating.

Don't forget, Frozen II took six years to arrive, so there's plenty of time yet. While we wait for any news though, here's everything you need to know about a potential Encanto 2.

Encanto 2 potential release date: When could we expect Encanto 2?

As mentioned, Disney hasn't confirmed Encanto 2, so it won't be a surprise to know there isn't a confirmed release date yet.

The first movie was in development for a few years before being officially confirmed by Lin-Manuel Miranda in June 2020. It arrived in cinemas in November 2021, but we can expect a few years' wait for a sequel (if it happens).

Zootopia came out in 2016 and is only just getting a sequel, so that could suggest a long wait for Encanto 2. Hopefully it wouldn't be that long, but until it's confirmed, it's impossible to say when it will be released.

Encanto ending explained: Does it set up Encanto 2?

The first movie sees Mirabel attempt to save the family's magical home, the Casita, after it starts to crack and the candle begins to flicker.

After the Casita is destroyed and the candle dies, Mirabel flees as she thinks it's all her fault. However, after reconciling with Abuela, the Madrigals are reunited and work together with the community to rebuild the Casita. Mirabel is given a doorknob to place in the front door and when she does, the magic comes back for everyone.

Well, except Mirabel still doesn't have a power, technically, but she's pretty special all the same. There are plenty of theories out there about why she wasn't given a power if you want to dig into them.

For Stephanie Beatriz, the fact that Mirabel doesn't have a power is missing the point. "If you really do a close listen to those lyrics, oftentimes it's just right there," she told Digital Spy.

"The miracle is you – all of you, all of you. That line gets repeated a couple of times. And that line could be read a couple of different ways, right? All of you – pointing to a group of people. The miracle is all of you guys, right?

"And the miracle is also all of you – all of who you are; all the parts of you is the miracle. There's no one alive that's ever been just like you, and there won't be again."

Great, now we're crying again.

As we mentioned above, Encanto's ending doesn't really set up a sequel directly as it's a self-contained story. That doesn't mean there aren't potential new angles to explore in the sequel though.

One fan theory has Mirabel taking over from Abuela as the Casita's matriarch and that's why she didn't get a power, potentially leading the family out from the community and into the wider world again.

We'd be happy to watch any future adventures of the family Madrigal, so the sequel could go anywhere. Jessica Darrow, who voices Luisa, has her own thoughts on what could happen next.

"I want Luisa to take a break. I really want the humanisation of Luisa, you know, we saw all of the hard stuff that she has to deal with and the anxieties that she experiences," she told Buzzfeed.

"I want to see a day where she does get to experience joy and relaxation and simple pleasure. And I also want to see her hang out with the unicorn donkey a little more. And [for] the donkeys to talk. That'd be cool."

It could also be that we don't see an Encanto 2, but a spin-off TV series on Disney+ instead that follows different members of the family.

"I think with this movie especially we fell in love with every single character, and I think that we try to design them in a way that you want to know more about them," director Jared Bush told The Digital Fix.

"So I would very, very happily see a show about any member of that family."

Co-director Charise Castro-Smith added: "I can tell you that Lin-Manuel Miranda really wants a show about Dolores."

Encanto 2 cast: Who's coming back for Encanto 2?

We'd expect to see the entire main cast back for a potential sequel, which would again likely be led by Stephanie Beatriz as Mirabel.

She'll be joined by the likes of John Leguizamo as Bruno, Jessica Darrow as Luisa, Diane Guerrero as Isabela, María Cecilia Botero as Abuela, Mauro Castillo as Félix, Angie Cepeda as Julieta and Wilmer Valderrama as Agustín.

In an interview with Collider last year, co-writer Lin-Manuel Miranda (who was nominated for an Oscar for the Encanto song 'Dos Oruguitas') indicated he would definitely be interested in returning for a sequel, too.

"I do think there's an appetite to further explore the Madrigal family," he said. "I think it's a question of when and not if, and what form that will take."

"I'd be down to continue to explore that. I love writing for Dolores and Camilo. I'd love to write more for them. I'd love to write more for Isabela. So I'm not sure what the next form of that will be, but we haven't had specific conversations about it's this or it's this."

Since the sequel – or a spin-off series – hasn't been confirmed though, there hasn't been any official cast or crew announcements as of yet. Most of the cast did reprise their roles for a Hollywood Bowl performance though, which you can watch now on Disney+.

Encanto 2 trailer: Any Encanto 2 footage yet?

We wish we could give you new footage of the family Madrigal, but it just isn't happening yet as Encanto 2 hasn't been confirmed by Disney.
