In the last one of a series of blogs looking at significant figures in the pet world, we turn the spotlight on Julian Norton.
Julian Norton is a British veterinary surgeon, writer and television host, best recognised for his appearances on The Yorkshire Vet, the Channel 5 TV series.
Early life
Norton was born and raised in Castleford's mining town and attended the Queen Elizabeth Grammar School in Wakefield. He then gained a place at Cambridge University to study veterinary medicine.
Career
Norton has been involved since 2015, holding the main role in The Yorkshire Vet, created by Daisybeck Studios in Leeds, a Channel 5 docuseries. The program was popular, attaining over 2 million viewing numbers, making it one of the most successful shows on the channel. Julian also appeared on The Wright Stuff as a frequent guest as well as Springtime on the Farm and Big Week at the Zoo.
He has written three books, Horses, Heifers and Hairy Pigs: The Life of a Yorkshire Vet in 2016 (an autobiographical account of his veterinary career), A Yorkshire Vet Through the Seasons in 2017, both published by Michael O’Mara, and The Diary of a Yorkshire Vet, published by Great Northern Books. He also contributed weekly on The Country Week column in The Yorkshire Post.
Sporting achievements
Held the 24-hour indoor rowing world record in 2010 with friend Roger Brown, and ex-Olympic rower.
Completed the UK Ironman championships in 2013, finishing in the Top 50.
Represented Team GB at the European Long Course Duathlon at age-group level in 2014 and 2015 and Team GB age-group for European Middle-Distance Triathlon Championships in Majorca 2014 and Rimini 2015.
Personal life
Norton is a mixed-practice veterinary surgeon living in North Yorkshire with his wife, Anne, and two children, Jack and Archie.
He spent most of his working life in Thirsk, working first as an assistant, then as a partner in the practice that was once the surgery from which Alf Wight worked, penning his famous stories under James Herriot's pseudonym. He mainly operates at Boroughbridge's Rae, Bean and Partners.
