You should hang out FIVE times before sleeping together (2024)

If you want your relationship to work, you may want to wait until your fifth date before sleeping together.

Danish pleasure and lifestyle brand AVEConcept polled 2,000 Americans in order to gather a better understanding of modern day intimacy before compiling an official timeline detailing when certain milestone events should ideally occur for the perfect relationship.

And while the unwritten 'three date rule' is widely recognized as the suggested amount of time for waiting to be intimate, this new research reveals that potential couples are holding out even longer.

Waiting game: A newly-created timeline suggests that the three date rule is a think of the past

The new rules: Danish pleasure and lifestyle brand AVEConcept polled 2,000 Americans to compile an official relationship timeline

Perfect timing? The research suggests that the average American will wait until the fifth date to get intimate with a new partner

The newly-created relationship timeline suggests that going on just three dates before hitting the sack is a thing of the past.

Meanwhile, becoming an official boyfriend or girlfriend should come in after around two months of dating.

And if you want the relationship to be a success, don't introduce a partner to your parents until at least four months in, according to the timeline.

Money and past relationships are both touchy subjects for new couples, and AVEConcept's research suggests that you should wait five months before dishing about your income or your ex.

Financially savvy: According to the survey, people should wait five months to discuss income with their partners and nearly six months to ask their credit score

Americans also feel you should wait 5.7 months on average before asking about someone’s credit score.

However, the results show that people think it's okay to dole out criticism on how a partner dresses after just two months and nine days.

'Sometimes relationships are all about timing - whether that means introducing a new flame to the family or bringing adventurous new options into the bedroom,' a spokesperson for AVE said. 'What is clear from the survey is that around three to four months are when people actually start getting comfortable

Slow and steady: Introduce your partner to your friends after two months of dating, but wait two more months before you bring them home to meet your parents

Laundry day: After three months, people start to feel comfortable wearing unattractive underwear with their partners

Four months and 20 days is about when the average American feels comfortable enough to disclose their sexual likes and dislikes to a new partner, but it isn't until a full month longer that they reckon its okay to begin introducing sex toys into the bedroom.

'We understand the importance of feeling comfortable with your partner. That’s why we don’t just focus on sex toys, but more about pleasure and lifestyle,' the spokesperson added. The survey shows that while people are willing to experience pleasure, they will not do so at the expense of comfort.'

When it comes to bathroom behavior, it takes four months and eight days before partners are ready to stop locking the door in each other's presence.

Don't diss dad! Hate your partner's family? The survey shows that the average American thinks you need to wait at least 11 weeks before you share your criticisms

Meanwhile, four months and 11 days is about the time people say they would feel comfortable crying in front of their love interest.

However, things get a bit trickier when it comes to discussing past mistakes with the law or political views.

Of the seven percent of respondents who admitted to having a criminal record, it would take a little over two months of dating before they felt comfortable revealing their record to a new partner – though more than a quarter of them claim they would disclose their record before or on the first date.

And while that may be best for them, respondents say that if they were dating someone with a criminal record, they think it would be appropriate to bring it up just after one month of dating.

Just say no: More than half of Americans think it is never okay to share your partner's toothbrush

The survey says suggests that it should take about five weeks and four days before talking about politics, five weeks and three days before discussing religion, six weeks and five days before revealing views on abortion and eight weeks and three days before bringing up an ex-partner.

But there are plenty of things that Americans believe it is never okay to do with a partner, with 60 per cent of respondents saying that sharing a toothbrush is never a good idea, no matter how long you have been with someone.

One in four people thinks that talking about past sexual partners should always be off limits and a third thinks it’s never okay to pass gas in front of one another.

Meanwhile, whirlwind romances may be a thing of the past, as the timeline states that couples shouldn't even think about getting engaged until after 23 months together.
