What can you not take into the British Museum?
For everyone's safety, all bags, rucksacks, packages and personal items may be searched before entry. Wheeled cases, sports equipment and large items of luggage are not allowed on British Museum premises.
These include cafés, a pizzeria and the Great Court Restaurant. Families are welcome to use our family-friendly eating areas, or you can ask for a high chair at the eateries below.
No large bags or suitcases are allowed into the museum. While they do offer a cloakroom facility, what that will store is restricted to coats, umbrellas, and small handbags. You may be asked to open any bag that you are carrying so that it can be security checked.
At NHM and La Brea Tar Pits, on the water-conservation front, we have eliminated individual plastic water bottles. We have also installed water bottle refill stations so thirsty visitors can bring in reusable bottles and be instantly hydrated.
First, backpacks are not allowed in the museum's main galleries. There is a designated backpack storage area near the museum entrance where you can store your backpack while you explore the museum.
Picnics and packed lunches
Families with young children may bring their own food to eat in the Ford Centre which is open on weekends and during London Borough of Camden school holidays (Opens in new window).
Recommended visiting time is at least three to four hours, but if you're interested in joining some of the many different talks and tours at the museum, then be prepared to spend the entire day wandering around.
Access to non-public areas 11.1 If you are found by staff in a non-public or closed area without authority you will be required to explain your presence and provide proof of identification. You may also be escorted from the Museum premises.
Please respect staff and other members of the public during your visit. Food and drink must not be consumed in the picture galleries.
It is usually a man who looks into the bags as they are displayed at museums. Almost all museums and art galleries require you to show your bag for inspection. Most items, apart from weapons, are permitted to be brought in. You must, however, keep your food and drink in your bag.
Why do museums make you put backpack in front?
Smaller backpacks and bags are permitted, at the discretion of the museum's security officers, if they are hand-carried. Backpacks may not be worn on the back, but must be carried on the side, under the arm, or on the front of the body. These limitations help us protect the artworks from accidental damage.

There are no permitted bags, small carry-ons, or oversize backpacks in the Museum. Bike clubs, roller skates, skateboards, wagons, and scooters are not permitted in the city. Items such as firearms, pepper spray, and Mace may also be prohibited.
There is restaurants in the Museum and there is benches in the Lobby where you can have packed lunches.
