Did Claude Monet influence Van Gogh?
Van Gogh discovered Impressionism and began to explore its implications during the two years he spent in Paris, from late February 1886 to February 1888. For him, the quintessential Impressionist painter was always Claude Monet.
1880-86: decides to become an artist, and studies in Brussels before moving to Nuenen in Holland with his parents. Paints sombre scenes of peasant life, including The Potato Eaters (above). 1886-88: moves to Paris with his brother Theo and meets Monet, Pissarro, Gaugin and Emil Bernard.
Perhaps two of the most renowned artists ever to live were Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet. These two artists, although said to be very different, have many similarities. They were born merely 13 years apart, putting them in the same time period.
If we can be certain about one thing, it's that Theo was Vincent's best friend. But he could also count others amongst his friends. During his Dutch period, he had regular contact with Anthon van Rappard, a fellow artist with whom he sometimes went painting.
First, when Jack visits Rose's room, he looks at Waterlilies by Monet. Although the painting did exist at the time of the Titanic, it was never aboard – and it never sank with the ship.
Possibly one of the greatest artistic influences on Vincent van Gogh was Paul Gauguin. Van Gogh and Gauguin met in Paris in November of 1887. Van Gogh had organized an art exhibit from those who Van Gogh called the Impressionists of the Petit Boulevard.

The two famous late-19th century painters were close friends, even creating a community of avant-garde artists together. In October 1888, Gauguin joined Van Gogh in Arles at the “Yellow House” he was renting, staying there for just over two months.
Van Gogh's early and dark years
Only in 1880, so 8 years after Monet had painted “Impression, Sunrise”, Vincent van Gogh started painting. The first 5 years of his painting career focusing on sombre scenes with mainly dark colors, completely unlike the impressionists (he painted "The Potato Eaters" in 1885).
Up until his death in 1891, control of the collection was in the hands of Vincent's brother, Theo van Gogh. His widow, Jo van Gogh-Bonger, subsequently took over management of the collection. Following her death in 1925, her son, Vincent Willem van Gogh ('the Engineer'), assumed responsibility for his uncle's works.
As he lay on his death bed, having apparently shot himself, Vincent Van Gogh is said to have uttered the final words, "The sadness will last forever". It's hard to imagine a bleaker prophecy from the famed and deeply troubled Dutch artist.
What happened to Van Gogh's wife?
Hoornik ultimately drowned herself in 1904. Although Van Gogh scholar Jan Hulsker had previously written of her suicide, the exact date and circ*mstances had never been identified.

Vincent's first commission was from his uncle Cor. He was an art dealer and wanted to help his nephew on his way, so he ordered 19 cityscapes of The Hague. Vincent sold his first painting to the Parisian paint and art dealer Julien Tanguy, and his brother Theo successfully sold another work to a gallery in London.
Between 1912 and 1918 his vision dropped from roughly 20/50 to 20/100. By 1922 he was down to an estimated 20/200, legally blind. Monet's painting was deteriorating, too. Instead of the fine, intricate strokes he used before, his brushstrokes now became coarse and thick.

What made Van Gogh a genius?
Today, Vincent van Gogh is considered the greatest Dutch painter after Rembrandt. He completed more than 2,100 works, consisting of 860 oil paintings and more than 1,300 watercolors, drawings and sketches. His paintings that no one wanted to buy in his lifetime are now worth millions and millions of dollars.
Van Gogh, moreover, did not suffer from dementia, as can be seen from his writings and paintings right up until the end of his life. He did not show the symptoms of general paralysis, a well-known pathology at the time, or any signs of tabes.
As the son of a minister, Van Gogh naturally had a Christian upbringing. His father was a Protestant minister and belonged to a part of the church with a moderate, liberal perspective.
Josien and Sylvia are the granddaughters of Willem, great-grandchildren of Theo and so great-grandnieces of Vincent, who shot himself in 1890. They have lived with the name all their lives so at times seem slightly blase about the family inheritance.
Claude Monet was known for more realistic use of color tone in his works while Vincent Van Gogh is better known for far more bold and striking color choices. This in essence is one of the marked differences between the impressionist and post-impressionists.

Vincent van Gogh took his own life in July 1890. He felt he couldn't go on. The immense demands he made of himself, his obsessive labour, his mental illness and, not least, his changing relationship with his brother had all become too much. Vincent wrote to Theo: 'I feel – a failure.

Claude Monet achieved fame for being the initiator, leader, and unswerving advocate of the Impressionist style. In his work he did not try to reproduce a scene faithfully as examined in detail but rather attempted to record on the spot the impression that a relaxed, momentary vision of the scene gave him.
