Do salons charge extra to remove gel polish?
Simply scraping or peeling the polish off can ruin your nail beds and cuticles. And those bad habits have consequences—it could actually make it harder for future gel polish to stay on. To keep your nails healthy, it's safest to have your gels removed at the salon. Removal fees can cost anywhere between $10-$20.
DON'T rip them off. You can either have gels removed at a salon safely (it usually costs around $10-$20) or remove them yourself at home with acetone, tin foil, cotton balls, and a nail file. If you go to the salon, make sure your technician is removing your gels carefully.
To quickly remove gel polish, most nail salons applying acetone-soaked cotton balls directly to your nails and wrap them in aluminum foil. If residual polish isn't easily removable after a 10 minute waiting period, your local nail salon may also opt to use professional tools, like a nail drill, for a clean finish.
While the process of applying the polish is similar for both a regular and gel manicure, gel polish needs to be cured with UV light after each layer is applied, including the base and top coat. It's a lengthier process and, as a result, the cost of service is higher at most salons.
Your nails are perfectly safe in the process, and having your polish professionally removed is the healthiest thing you can do for them. *Don't ever try and peel gel polish off yourself, as you could take layers off your natural nail. This is a job best left to the experts…
Acetone offers the most effective way to remove gel nail polish at home, says board-certified dermatologist Shari Lipner, MD, FAAD. Instead of wrapping your nails in foil, she recommends using plastic food wrap.
Each cotton pad will be dipped in the acetone and wrapped around each nail. This will keep the varnish remover pressed against the polish, but won't soak your cuticles. Yep, really. Tin foil is wrapped securely around each nail to keep the cotton pads in place.
Studies show that, over time, gel polish and its removal with acetone or manual peeling can weaken your nails, contributing to nail dehydration and thinning of the nail plate. Essentially, the process is tough on your nails.

This ensures the product comes off completely without having to be pried off.”
The gel topcoat is a tough, nearly impermeable layer that seals the color in place—that's why gel manis are able to last for weeks instead of days. Scratching the surface with a coarse nail file will help the acetone to penetrate without a hitch.
When should gel nails be removed?
I'll give it to you straight: The longest you can wear a gel manicure without compromising your nail health is two weeks, says Evelyn Lim, chief educator of New York–based nail salon Paintbox.
You should tip 20% for your manicure. If your manicure was $50, then $10 is a good tip since it's 20% of the original service price.
On average, you should tip between 15% and 20% for a pedicure. Think of what the nail esthetician had to do with your feet and the extra effort they might have put in to make you feel more comfortable.
If you go very infrequently, say, a couple times a year or less, gel manicures might be worth it for how durable and reliable they are to last you through a special occasion (like a wedding or speaking at a conference). But for most folks who don't go regularly, gels don't make financial sense.
Although gel manicures can be beautiful and long-lasting, they can be tough on nails. Gel manicures can cause nail brittleness, peeling and cracking, and repeated use can increase the risk for skin cancer and premature skin aging on the hands.
Our number one tip: Don't pick or peel off your gels. It never ends well. If you notice white spots, lines or an unevenness on your natural nails, it can take anywhere between three to six months for them to go away, as that's typically how long it takes for your nails to grow out completely.
"Trimming your nails will break the seal at the tip of your nail [created by the gel polish and UV light], making it more vulnerable to chipping, peeling, and snagging," says Amy Ling Lin, founder of sundays studio in New York City.
"The best method for removing gel is—hands down—the filing method," says Tait. In nail salons, this particular method can be referred to as drilling because the tool itself looks something like a power drill. "Filing is really the most effective and safest way to remove the gel polish from acrylics," explains Tait.
How often is it safe to get them? Gel nails usually last 2–3 weeks. While people can safely have gel nails every few weeks, dermatologists recommend keeping the nails bare for at least 1–2 weeks in between manicures. This helps to strengthen, repair, and rehydrate the nails.
However, Hadley suggests removing a gel manicure after two to three weeks maximum to avoid damaging nail beds and cuticles. Harpring agrees, adding that overextending gel manicures can not only lead to weakened nails, but also introduce potentially harmful bacteria.
Why are my nails so bad after gel polish?
Your nails get used to the gel and its protective coating, so they start breaking and snapping after the gel is removed. As nails take up to 6 months to fully grow out, it's a lot of inconvenience and discomfort! Paper-thin nails after acrylics are another common issue.
So how long should you leave between applying builder gel again? In our experience a break for a week every eight weeks will be the perfect length of time to let your natural nails breathe. During the break period, make sure to keep your nails moisturised and hydrated.
But in practice, people (and manicurists) often peel or chip away at the gel polish in order to speed things up. “That likely causes more nail damage and thinning,” she says. At the same time, the acetone itself can be an irritant, and so may lead to aching or pain after soaking.
Yes, the ingredients in gel nail polish are much different from regular polish. But there is also nothing harmful about the gel polish itself. There have been complaints about it ruining nails, but the gel itself doesn't ruin nails. This is why it's so important to find a professional and experienced nail salon.
Unlike normal polish, gel polish is not easily chipped or removed, making it a great long-lasting alternative to your regular colour. Once set under a UV light, your gel manicure shouldn't budge for 2-3 weeks.
"The biggest risk to leaving a gel manicure service on for longer than three weeks is that the extra weight can start pulling on the edge of your nail, causing tears in the base of your nails," says Reynosa. "They can then lift, which peels back keratin layers and causes more mechanical damage.
Avoid picking or peeling the product off as this could damage your natural nails. Avoid filing your nails and pushing your cuticles back, as this will break the seal of the gel and can lead to chipping.
Resins in a dip powder may be susceptible to water and household cleaners, while gel is solvent resistant. If your client uses or washes their hands regularly, a gel service might be better for them. A salon should be a safe space, where your clients can expect a clean, honest service that makes them feel good.
While there is no rule that says you need to tip in cash, it is often appreciated by nail technicians. If you are a regular and return to the same manicurist each time, it can be a nicety to extend the offer and plan ahead to tip in cash. If for some reason you are unhappy with your results, proceed with politeness.
The standard tip should always be 20%, according to Lee. But if you feel your nail tech deserves more, you should tip more. She also says cash is king.
Is $15 a good tip for nails?
"Nail technicians who do this [typically] have a huge clientele and want to be their own boss." In the end, tipping is all about customer satisfaction, so a standard 15 to 20 percent per nail tech, per service, is a fair amount, assuming you were happy with your experience.

Gel extensions are one of the most popular ways to get longer and stronger nails. But, of course, this nail technique has its pros and cons. Just like acrylic nails (one of the first salon-approved ways to extend your natural nail), they may last up to four weeks, but both have a reputation for being damaging.
A full acrylic set removal costs an average of $16, with the average cost ranging from $12 to $39. "Roughing up the nail with files not meant for natural nails prior to application, forcefully scraping off product during removal instead of allowing it to release, aggressive filing again after removal, and picking and peeling off the gel polish can all cause damage," she says.
What happens when you leave gel polish on toes too long?
The danger with keeping your nail polish on too long is that the pigment in the nail polish can soak into the top few layers of the nail and dry it out, Dr. Rowland says.
Gel polish lasts between 2-3 weeks at the minimum, while regular polish is lucky to go a week without chipping. With light wear, your gel nails last at least twice as long as a normal polish, but realistically they get you four to six times a standard manicure mileage.
