In 2016, NSAWC was rebranded as the Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center (NAWDC), where Top Gun remains a department alongside graduate-level Weapons Schools for other Naval Aviation platforms.
Top Gun was created to address the Navy's poor air to air showing in Vietnam. It became famous for the movie. The Air Force has Red Flag which includes a wide range of mission types that includes CAS, refueling, bombing, logistics, transport etc. as well as dogfighting.
The Navy, including TOPGUN, uses it as an adversarial aircraft to train its best fighter pilots.

Established in 1969, TOPGUN continues to train generations of fighter pilots, adversary instructors, and air-intercept controllers.
That location is now a Marine Corps air base, and since the mid-1990s, TOPGUN has been located at Naval Air Station Fallon, Nevada. While the location, the aircraft and the technology have changed over the years, the mission is essentially the same.
In summer 1996, TOPGUN moved north from its ancestral home at NAS Miramar in San Diego to NAS Fallon, where it remains today.

When a naval aviator first enters the Navy, he is commissioned as an ensign, the lowest-commissioned rank, as explained on the Military Benefits website. After ensign, an officer is promoted to lieutenant junior grade. The next rank up is lieutenant. The rank above lieutenant is lieutenant commander.
