NASA's Parker Solar Probe is the first-ever mission to "touch" the Sun. The spacecraft, about the size of a small car, travels directly through the Sun's atmosphere --ultimately to a distance of bout 4 million miles from the surface.
But if you take a look around, there's nothing here for you to actually land on, because the sun doesn't have any solid surface to speak of. It's just a giant ball of hydrogen and helium gas.

Touching the Sun
NASA's Parker Solar Probe made history by becoming the first spacecraft to have "touched the Sun" earlier this year, the agency has now confirmed. The tiny probe made its way through the star's upper atmosphere, taking important readings of its surroundings.
No person has ever walked on the sun. Other than the fact a human would disintegrate if they got near it - it is, as all stars are, a hot ball of gas made up mostly of Hydrogen, and is not solid.
The sun's surface is about 6,000 Kelvin, which is 10,340 degrees Fahrenheit (5,726 degrees Celsius). The sun would melt anything that got near it. But we can send robotic probes toward the sun and even around it.
This NASA probe became a trailblazer without burning up. Did Earth went far from the sun?
Half a year after perihelion, Earth reaches its farthest distance from the star, which is called aphelion. At that moment, the planet is approximately 94.5 million miles (152.1 million km) from the sun. Aphelion occurs in early July. Perihelion and aphelion average out to about 93 million miles (150 million km).
The nearest star is 25,300,000,000,000 miles (about 39,900,000,000,000 kilometers) away. It would take the fastest rockets that we have thousands of years to reach it. It is always possible that sometime in the future people may find a way to travel to the stars, but right now we just do not have the technology.

Space is very, very cold. The baseline temperature of outer space is 2.7 kelvins (opens in new tab) — minus 454.81 degrees Fahrenheit, or minus 270.45 degrees Celsius — meaning it is barely above absolute zero, the point at which molecular motion stops.
With no sunlight, photosynthesis would stop, but that would only kill some of the plants—there are some larger trees that can survive for decades without it. Within a few days, however, the temperatures would begin to drop, and any humans left on the planet's surface would die soon after.

The sun is no different, and when the sun dies, the Earth goes with it. But our planet won't go quietly into the night. Rather, when the sun expands into a red giant during the throes of death, it will vaporize the Earth.
In about 5.5 billion years the Sun will run out of hydrogen and begin expanding as it burns helium. It will swap from being a yellow giant to a red giant, expanding beyond the orbit of Mars and vaporizing Earth—including the atoms that make-up you.
The earliest life forms we know of were microscopic organisms (microbes) that left signals of their presence in rocks about 3.7 billion years old. The signals consisted of a type of carbon molecule that is produced by living things.
In short, some of our water could actually be older than the sun. A recent study estimated that there are water molecules on Earth that are up to 4.6 billion years old, which means they predate the formation of the Milky Way.
What is the oldest planet?
Jupiter formed less than 3 million years after the birth of the solar system, making it the eldest planet. Saturn formed shortly after, amassing less material since Jupiter gobbled such a large portion of the outer disk.

The sun formed more than 4.5 billion years ago, when a cloud of dust and gas called a nebula collapsed under its own gravity. As it did, the cloud spun and flattened into a disk, with our sun forming at its center. The disk's outskirts later accreted into our solar system, including Earth and the other planets.
Ancient Greeks called the Sun Helios, and this word is still used to describe the Sun today. During the reign of the Roman Empire, Helios was replaced with the Latin name Sol. Like Helios, Sol is a term that is still used to describe the Sun.
The very first nation to reach the surface of the moon was the USSR (Russia), whose unmanned spacecraft Luna 2 impacted the moon' surface on 12 September 1959. While Luna 2 was the first probe to land on the moon, it had been designed to crash-land into the surface (a "hard landing") rather than conduct a soft landing.
And the answer: lightning. According to NASA, lightning is four times hotter than the surface of the sun. The air around a stroke of lightning can peak at 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit, while the surface of the sun is around 11,000 degrees. Meanwhile, magma can reach temperatures near 2,100 degrees.
Potential for Life
The surface of Pluto is extremely cold, so it seems unlikely that life could exist there. At such cold temperatures, water, which is vital for life as we know it, is essentially rock-like. Pluto's interior is warmer, however, and some think there could even be an ocean deep inside.
Can we ever go near sun?
An astronaut in his suit could get up to three million miles from the sun before getting into serious trouble, but NASA's spacecraft can do much more. Considering that the sun is 93 million miles away from Earth, humans can get really close.
A comet got caught at the hot end of that punchline over the weekend when the cosmic snowball was captured careening into the sun early Sunday by NASA's Solar and Heliospheric Observatory.

Within a few days, however, the temperatures would begin to drop, and any humans left on the planet's surface would die soon after. Within two months, the ocean's surface would freeze over, but it would take another thousand years for our seas to freeze solid.
What is the closest a human has ever gotten to the sun?
What is the closest distance ever reached to the Sun? The closest humans traveled to the Sun would be during one of the Apollo missions to the moon. The Apollo 17 mission was launched in December when Earth is nearest to perihelion (147 million km to the Sun).

Eternal night would fall over the planet and Earth will start traveling into interstellar space at 18 miles per second. Within 2 seconds, the full moon reflecting the sun's rays on the dark side of the planet would also go dark.
The gravitational pull of the moon moderates Earth's wobble, keeping the climate stable. That's a boon for life. Without it, we could have enormous climate mood swings over billions of years, with different areas getting extraordinarily hot and then plunging into long ice ages.
Destruction of planets would take place, because of the sudden loss of the sun's gravitational pull. Planets, including Earth, would begin moving away from their usual paths and could collide with other gigantic bodies, leading to their destruction.
In space or on the Moon there is no atmosphere to scatter light. The light from the sun travels a straight line without scattering and all the colors stay together.
In addition, 8% of the grains dated in the study are more than a billion years older than the Sun. One grain is more than 3 billion years older than the Sun, which, at more than 7 billion years, makes it the oldest solid material on Earth.
