Can you bring food into the Boston Museum of Science?
Should you prefer to bring in your own food, you are welcome to consume it outside on the front plaza outside or at the picnic tables behind the Museum, or in the Atrium. Please note: Consuming food in the Exhibit Halls is not permitted.
In 2011, announcing the largest fundraising effort in its 185-year history, the Museum embarked on the transformation of more than half of its 130,000 square feet of gallery space to tell the story of the natural and engineered worlds, enhance visitor experience, and make the facility more sustainable.
You are welcome to explore the museum for as long as you would like, but an average visit takes around two hours.

If going to an art museum is something you like doing, then an hour to two hours is a good average visit. For someone who loves visiting art museums, two to three hours is a good average visit.
What age is Boston museum of Science good for?
The Boston Museum of Science has many interactive exhibits for kids ages 4-11. I would not recommend bringing older children to the museum because the displays were designed for younger children. They had exhibitions from biology to weather. I enjoyed the Future of Boston exhibit the most.
An exciting interactive space, created especially for children aged 3–6 and their parents and carers. Inquisitive children can explore the main areas—construction, water, light and sound. While playing, they can find out about floating and sinking, shadows and reflections, and much more.
Without a doubt, the Mapparium is a unique place to visit, for various reasons. The handcrafted individual glass panes are beautiful and the experience of standing in a place with perfect acoustics is worth the trip.
There is no dress code when visiting the National Museum.

- Bring large bags or backpacks into the gallery.
- Run through the halls screaming or play your bagpipes in the galleries. (Soft tenor sax is fine.)
Museums inevitably involve a lot of walking, sometimes for hours, and you'll need to wear comfortable slip-on shoes like loafers, mules, or fashion sneakers. Don't go so far as to wear flip-flops, though. They might not be appropriate in such a formal setting. Avoid high heels as well.
Consider layers and comfortable footwear, but stick to elevated classics. You might be tempted to hit the cultural institution in your most casual outfits, but it's worth paying a little respect to the greats you've gone to visit, dressing in a way that might pay proper homage to the artwork you see on the walls.
While visiting a museum, it is best to dress comfortably while still looking nice. Women should wear dresses or skirts that are at least knee-length, off-the-shoulder tops, and simple t-shirts. Make sure to bring comfortable shoes with you; button-down shirts, jeans, and jackets are all good options for men.
Either pack an umbrella or be prepared to buy one if needed. Lightweight "travel" umbrellas are fine unless we have a nor'easter - but if that happens, you'll get wet whatever you carry because of the wind.
Is the Boston Museum of Science Worth the Trip? In short, yes! The science museum is a truly special place to visit. With exhibits and activities for kids of all ages, from toddlers to adults, you will want to go back again.

'Night at the Museum' is most certainly a crowd pleaser and with the action being fun enough to appeal to every member of the audience, it is a great family film. Due to some scenes containing scary moments, we recommend 'Night at the Museum' for kids aged 6 and over.

I have been to museums that allowed no backpacks, and at least one where I was asked by staff to carry my small backpack by hand instead of carrying it on one shoulder. The reason given in the latter scenario was that a backpack presented a risk to paintings even when carried on one shoulder.

There is a bag check by the entrance. Meaning like a sporting event security will look through the bag before letting it in. You are not required to physically check in bag into storage.
You may bring your own food to the Museum to enjoy outside of the exhibits. However, because there is no food allowed in the Exhibit Halls, it should be kept in a bag. Bag size. Any bag larger than 12 inches by 12 inches by 12 inches will not be permitted, with the exception of diaper bags and carriers for medical supplies. Bags, strollers, backpacks, and packages are subject to inspection.
Can you bring a backpack to the Museum of Natural History? Luggage, small carry-ons, and oversized backpacks are not allowed into the Museum and cannot be checked.
