Please note that the trip takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes each way, and that visitors spend an average 2-4 hours at the Udvar-Hazy Center. We recommend planning a whole day for each location.
The Udvar-Hazy Center, located at Washington-Dulles International Airport, is part of the Smithsonian's Air & Space Museum. It is free to enter, but parking is $15/day. Some access by public transit.

The Smithsonian Institution has announced that the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center will reopen May 5 following months of closure as a public health precaution due to COVID-19.

The museum is open daily from 10;00 am - 5:30 pm. Admission is free, parking is $15/car (free for vehicles entering after 4:00 pm). Public transportation is available via Fairfax Connector at the Wiehle/Reston East Metro station and Dulles Airport.
Wear light clothes: if you wear white clothes the projected lights will make you look part of the exhibition. Because many of the rooms are dark, it would be hard to stand out as the subject in a photo if your clothing is also dark. Definitely avoid wearing black on the day.
Most meters are enforced between 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, so anything outside the time is fair game to park at for free. How Much Does it Cost after 6 pm to park at Disney World Theme Parks? Disney Parking Costs after 6 pm are the SAME as they are any other time of day. The only exception to this is if you have a Table in Wonderland card, which we'll chat about below.
Things to Know Before You Go
Admission to the museum is free. Group tours are available if booked in advance. Photography for personal use is allowed, though the use of flash is not permitted. Food, bottled water, and ballpoint pens are not permitted inside the museum.
Suitcases, large umbrellas, and large backpacks are not allowed in the galleries. Security officers may ask visitors to hand-carry smaller backpacks, or wear them on the front of their bodies. Please note that we do not offer coat or bag storage.
Visitors are permitted to bring food and beverages in sealed containers inside a backpack or other bag. Food and beverages may not be consumed in the museum.

The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, also called the Udvar-Hazy Center, is the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum (NASM)'s annex at Washington Dulles International Airport in the Chantilly area of Fairfax County, Virginia.
Among the aviation artifacts on display are the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, the fastest jet in the world; the Boeing Dash 80, the prototype of the 707; the Boeing B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay; and the deHavilland Chipmunk aerobatic airplane.
As previous answer, No you cannot go inside it. There are observation platforms, from which you can take photographs, but that's about all. The room has fact boards, and pieces of equipment used on the shuttle, which is interesting.
Answer and Explanation: There have been two space shuttles lost due to explosion. The Challenger shuttle exploded in 1986 due to a leak in it's fuel system causing the booster rockets to separate. This was followed on February 1st, 2003 with the Columbia explosion.
Discovery is now in its new permanent home, the James S. McDonnell Space Hangar at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center.

The museum, on the National Mall in Washington, has been closed since March, and the west wing has been closed for extensive renovations since 2018. The east wing is now closed and undergoing similar upgrades. The seven-year project is expected to be finished in 2025.

Located along P. Burgos Drive very near Intramuros and Rizal Park, the National Museum is quite accessible via commute. Parking is available but limited along the museum driveway.

Our family included a 4, 9, and 20 year old children. They all enjoyed the exhibits. There's so much to do and see that 2-3 hours is probably a good time allotment. Plus, if you are a member of a science center in your area, you will get free admission.
How long is the sky show at Adler Planetarium?
Shows are approximately 30 minutes and run according to a schedule. Certain shows play multiple times a day whereas others have just one showing or are only shown during extended hours. Check the calendar for the latest schedules.
Arrive at the parking ticket kiosk after 4:01 pm and you have about 90 minutes to enjoy the museum for free, before they close.

How long does it take to walk through the museum? Most people take 20-30 minutes. However, we do not have a time limit, so guests are welcome to stay as long as they want.
It is best to wear loose-fitting clothing, such as t-shirts and sweatpants, during cooler months because they will stay cool during the hot summer months. Jeans are acceptable in the spring as long as they are light and loose; however, make sure they are wet and heavy if you are going on water rides.

Can you bring backpacks into the Smithsonians?

Limited, free, all-day parking is available along Ohio Drive, SW which is along the Potomac River south of the Lincoln Memorial, and in Lots A, B, and C south of the Thomas Jefferson Memorial. There are 18,000 on-street metered spaces throughout the District of Columbia.
