Is Coraline appropriate for children?
Coraline is an animated thriller containing some appealing but creepy special effects. Because of the themes and scary scenes, it is not a family film. It is more for older children and anyone who likes 3D special effects.
The Motion Picture Association's ratings board gave it a PG. I originally recommended it for 4th grade and up but on reflection have changed it to middle school and up, though when I saw the film again last night there were younger children in the audience who seemed to be doing fine with it.
Coraline is rated PG.
Common Sense Media, a website that helps parents and caregivers make more informed decisions about media, cites violence and scariness as the main reason for its recommendation that this movie is appropriate for kids 10 and older.
Why is Coraline rated PG? Coraline is rated PG by the MPAA for thematic elements, scary images, some language and suggestive humor. The fantastical world of Coraline is filled with eccentric characters, frightening scenes and moments of peril for the young heroine.
The signature blue hair in the movie gives Coraline her sense of identity and uniqueness of the cinematic level which is not required in the book. Her dyed hair is also included in the movie to show her rebellion, as we previously see it as brown through photographs.
Great film, but not for kids under 13
I recommend this film to everyone who loves slightly disturbing films and TV shows like me but for anyone under the age of 13 you really should not watch it. It's very gory and contains adult language.
Parents need to know that Coraline will scare young kids. Slightly less creepy than the book on which it was based, the movie is still quite dark, and the "other" world that Coraline discovers turns into a frightening, dangerous place where she could very well die (and other ghost children already have).
This film is known for being scary, and will likely terrify adults and scare children. Many frightening and intense scenes. The Other Mother screams in an insane, loud, high pitched way.
Gaiman himself has commented on the difference in this article from CBS: However, “adults get scared,” he said. “Adults get disturbed, and I think one reason for that is because it's a story about a child in danger and I think we're hardwired to worry about children in danger.”
Parents need to know that Neil Gaiman's Coraline is pretty creepy, and could be disturbing for sensitive kids: The central adventure is about a girl trying to save herself, her parents, and other trapped souls from the Other Mother in a secret world.
Why is Coraline creepy?
Another factor why Coraline is a terrifying children's story is how Gaiman constantly builds up the tension and the suspense by comparing Coraline's reality to a fantasy world. He sets up the scene by making the “real world” boring, frustrating, and dreary.

'Coraline' Was Inspired By A Folktale That's Even Creepier Than Neil Gaiman's Version.
Wybie Lovat is the tritagonist of the 2009 Laika film, Coraline. He is the grandson of Coraline's landlady who later became Coraline's boyfriend by the near end of the film.
The most notable thing about the novel's story, is that it revolves around having a girl as the protagonist. And not just simply a "girl", because nowadays that on its own does not cut it. But a strong female lead. Coraline is a well rounded character who develops on her own as a stable, coherent individual.
The name Coraline is primarily a female name of American origin that means Heart, Maiden. Diminutive form of Cora or a combination of the names Cora and Caroline.
Violence: 4/5-As its a TV movie the violence is very mild and mostly off screen. The blood is very little and not overused. The makeup is brilliant and Tim Curry provides a truly terrifying performance as Pennywise that the remake cannot provide. Dead body of a man who killed himself shown.
IT Chapter Two is quite gruesome and aggressive with its violent sequences, even having people beaten to a pulp from the very start of the movie. Considering that it's R-rated, IT Chapter Two doesn't hold back with the blood and how Pennywise devours his victims, which itself may be quite disturbing for some viewers.
A PG film should not unsettle a child aged around eight or older. Unaccompanied children of any age may watch, but parents are advised to consider whether the content may upset younger, or more sensitive, children.

But it is Henry Selick's stop-motion animation and character design that pushes this movie into the upper echelon of creepy kids' movies. “The Nightmare Before Christmas” had a similar vibe but was jovial overall. “Coraline” resembles the stories of kids' real lives and real fantasies.
Growing up in Perth, Coraline did not have a happy family life. She recalled being sexually abused by her father when she was three, in addition to numerous other physical and emotional abuses throughout her childhood.
Coraline's behavior is consistent with a psychotic-dissociative cluster as evidenced by her experiencing an alternate universe as well as incorporating fixed beliefs. As these are critical parts of the plot, it is best to formulate Coraline's behavior along a psychotic-dissociative spectrum.
Some confessed to having nightmares after viewing the film, while another side saw viewers calling the world of Coraline a comforting place for them.
Bobinsky may have helped clean up the town of Pripyat after The Chernobyl disaster. Henry Selick explains that Mr. Bobinsky's skin is blue because he's outside all the time, in the cold and damp weather, wearing only a sleeveless shirt and short pants. And the cold causes his skin to become blue.
Trivia. It was stuffed with sand instead of cotton when spying on Coraline. This reflects her other creations too, as other Wybie, the hummingbirds, and the circus mice are full of sand too.
But I think that teenagers and also kids (obviusly of 12 and 13 year old) should read this book because the lessons that they can carry carry off of this book and how the book results inspirational. The book have some errors as many of Stephen King books.
Because of content licensing and distribution agreements, Netflix is only allowed to air its movies and shows in countries that have rights to stream these movies and shows. If you look for Coraline on Netflix in the USA, you won't even see this title as an option when you type it into your search.
Is Coraline A Little Nightmare?
Even though Six, the little girl in the Little Nightmares video game and this series, and Coraline, the young girl main character in the 2009 film of the same name, also directed by Henry Selick, both wear yellow raincoats, the two characters are not related.
Shortly after moving into her new house, Coraline can hear them singing at night—their song is an ominous one, and its lyrics suggest that the rats are an eternal, immortal presence waiting for the “fall” of the real world, humanity, or both.
The button eyes were the objects used by the beldam to tie one's soul to the other world.

As the story progresses, Coraline runs away more and more to this "better world" and gets to know her new mother, who most likely adopted her after calling CPS on Coraline's parents.
The ending of both the novel and the movie shows Coraline escaping from the other world and returning to her own. Considering the film, Coraline tricks the Beldam into opening the door to the real world and distracts her while she rescues her parents in the snow globe.
