Is there a dress code for the Smithsonian museum?
When In Doubt, Wear Business Casual. Many of the National Institutions, like the Smithsonian Institution complex, the National Portrait Gallery, and the Natural History Museum are around the same area.
Generally, there are three dress codes that you may encounter in D.C.: Casual, Business Casual, and Business Professional.
Are backpacks, water bottles, and snack items allowed in the museum? We allow backpacks in our museum. Visitors are permitted to bring food and beverages in sealed containers inside a backpack or other bag. Food and beverages may not be consumed in the museum.
Suitcases, large umbrellas, and backpacks are not allowed in the galleries. Security officers may ask you to hand-carry smaller backpacks, or wear them on your front, to protect the artworks. Please note that we do not offer coat check or bag storage at this time. Strollers are permitted in the galleries.

Packing for DC in March
When you pack for a trip, be sure to check the weather the day before you depart. If it is going to be cold make sure bring your winter coat and winter gear. If it is going to be a little nicer, then the key is layers. You can start with a sweatshirt, then add a lightweight jacket.
At many of our museums, you'll be greeted upon entry by one of our security personnel who will conduct a thorough hand-check of all bags, briefcases, purses, and containers. Visitors are required to walk through a metal detector at the following museums: Air and Space Museum and its Udvar-Hazy Center (DC and VA)

While it will not be required, all visitors who feel more comfortable wearing a face mask during their visit are encouraged to do so. Visitors are not required to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination to enter the museum.

Neutrals and pastels – light colors – are always a safe bet
This color palette complements the clean, bright, light look of the gorgeous cherry blossoms. When you wear neutrals and pastels, you're fitting into the scene perfectly. The overall look comes across as peaceful, ethereal, and romantic.
You don't have to travel without a bag. Everyone carries a bag, including backpacks. Just make sure the bag is of reasonable day bag size. The big exception is the White House, where no bags of any kind, not even small purses are allowed.
Can I bring a backpack to DC?
You can bring in most items (except weapons!) but food and drink must remain in your bag. You will walk through a metal detector at: Air and Space Museum and its Udvar-Hazy Center (DC & VA) African American History and Culture Museum.

The Smithsonian does not offer bag storage, so anything you bring will have to be carried around with you while you explore the exhibits.
