South Sudan ranked as the least-electrified country in the world in 2019, with only seven percent of its population having access to electricity. Chad fared only slightly better, with an access rate of eight percent.
940 million (13% of the world) do not have access to electricity. 3 billion (40% of the world) do not have access to clean fuels for cooking. This comes at a high health cost for indoor air pollution. Per capita electricity consumption varies more than 100-fold across the world.
Lack of sufficient power generation capacity, poor transmission and distribution infrastructure, high costs of supply to remote areas, or simply a lack of affordability for electricity, are among the biggest hurdles for extending grid-based electricity.

Living without electricity isn't as hard as you'd think
Before Benjamin Franklin figured out electricity, we all lived without it. Nearly 250 thousand Amish people still live without electricity today, not to mention the thousands of people in developing countries.
Can the world run out of electricity?
We will never run out of electricity but we may run out of the fossil fuels used to produce it for domestic and industrial applications. Wind, solar and other types of renewable electricity will have to be relied on more than at present. As for electricity itself, the universe is filled with it.
The state-owned Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company blames technical challenges at its two main power stations. Problems at the ageing Kariba Hydro and Hwange Thermal power stations, as well as import constraints, have seen outages increase in recent weeks.
Sri Lanka has total electricity generating capacity of 40 GWH, as it mainly relies on thermal power, including a Chinese-built coal power plant, which accounts for 45 percent of its supply.
A senior Sri Lankan official has blamed poor quality crude oil imports for the shutdown of a power plant, leading to extended blackouts. Utilities regulator chief Janaka Ratnayake said the oil burnt in the furnaces had too much sulphur in it.

Industries like chemicals and cement in Germany and Italy might have to cut their gas usage by as much as 80%. The euro-area economy would likely shrink by more than 2% through March 2023, with GDP in Italy and Germany declining as much as 4% and 3% respectively.
Even in a worst-case scenario, in which there is no piped Russian gas and low demand destruction, BNEF estimates Europe would still have enough gas to endure the coldest winter of the last 30 years without depleting its inventories. Looking further ahead, the region could be well-positioned for winter 2023-24 as well.
China's oil, gas, coal and electricity purchases from Russia amount to $43.68 billion so far this year. Cheaper Russian energy supplies are helping to dampen inflation in China, where the economy narrowly avoided contracting in the second quarter amid COVID-19 lockdowns.
