What is the Space Needle famous for?
A Seattle Icon
Built for the 1962 World's Fair—the Century 21 Exposition whose theme was “The Age of Space”—the tower's futuristic design was inspired by the idea that the fair needed a structure to symbolize humanity's Space Age aspirations.

He doodled an idea of a dominant central structure for the fair on a napkin in a hotel café convinced that such a tower could make a permanent center-piece for the fair and an enduring symbol for Seattle. He called it a “Space Needle.”
General Space Needle tickets range in price from $24.50 to $37.50, depending on age, when you buy, and whether you are buying tickets for seniors or children. Tickets are available online, at the Space Needle itself and as part of a few different package deals, if you're looking to get more bang for your buck.
480 million copper needles. The needles were each about two-thirds of an inch long and not much wider (if at all) than a human hair, as seen below (via MIT). They were launched into medium Earth orbit, about 2,300 miles above the planet.
The idea for Needle was first doodled on a napkin or placemat by Seattle hotel executive Edward “Eddie” Carlson during a visit to Stuttgart, Germany in 1959.
Two of the Space Needle elevators are high speed and can travel at a rate of 10 mph, or 800 feet per minute. Actual travel time from the ground level to the top-house is 43 seconds.
What exactly is “Galaxy Gold”? The distinctive orange hue debuted at the 1962 Seattle World's Fair and will be making a reappearance as the Space Needle celebrates 60 years.
Why is the Space Needle Gold?
CELEBRATING 60 CONTEST
April 21, 2022 marked 60 years since the Space Needle's grand opening for the Century 21 Exposition (Seattle's Worlds Fair). To kick off our year-long anniversary celebration, the Space Needle's roof was painted its original color — Galaxy Gold!
The Space Needle is a member of the World Federation of Great Towers (WFGT), a worldwide organization of the tallest buildings in the world. There are 50 member towers in over 20 member countries around the world.
The Space Needle stands at 605 feet tall. The Space Needle offers 360-degree views from its three main viewing areas – an indoor observation deck and open-air viewing area located at 520 feet, and an observation level featuring a revolving glass floor located 500 feet above ground.
Buildings that will glow orange include the Space Needle, Pacific Science Center, T-Mobile Park, Lumen Field, and Climate Pledge Arena. The orange lights are a show of support for survivors of gun violence, a way to honor those who died from gun violence, and to show the city's commitment to action and change.
The Loupe Lounge. Space Needle. Orbit a while on the world's first and only revolving glass floor for a cocktail experience like nothing else around. Perched 500 feet above the city with unmatched views, The Loupe Lounge serves up showstopping mixology paired with tastes of the Pacific Northwest.
In addition, the main tourist attractions like Pike Place Market, Seattle Center, the Space Needle, and waterfront attractions are safe to explore. There are no particularly dangerous and unsafe neighborhoods in Seattle that you should never visit.
Glass and steel were the two main materials use during the renovation. More than 250 tons of glass and steel have been added to increase the strength, stability, functionality, and beauty to the tower's overall design. barrier glass.
The roof of the Seattle icon has been painted its original color of “galaxy gold,” in honor of the attraction's 60th anniversary and the color will remain for the coming year.
SkyCity at the Space Needle is one of the most expensive restaurants in Seattle. The average entrée price is $44.93—to spend this much on the ground, you'll have to get a menu degustation at Rover's or put on a tie and go to Canlis.
The Space Needle offers timed tickets for entry, which are a great way to help limit crowds. Because of that, you'll want to get your tickets as soon as possible so you can choose the 15-minute entry window that you want (note, you'll need to enter during this 15 minute window, but you can stay as long as you'd like).
Can you walk up the Space Needle?
Yes. For an additional $25 donation, you climb the Space Needle as many times as you would like! What should I wear? Our staircases are open-air, so please dress as if you were going for a run or walk outside (always factor in event day's weather conditions).
A needle is a physical mass and if it travels up to the speed of light, this mass can almost reach an infinite capacity, unleashing a destructive power of kinetic bombardment.
Why not just use a pencil? NASA wanted to avoid pencils because the lead could easily break off and float away, creating a hazard to astronauts and sensitive electronics on the spacecraft. In fact, a pencil is such an impractical alternative in space that cosmonauts also have been using Space Pens since 1969.
If you want your full dead body released into space, this is not currently possible because it will only contribute to space debris as we dont travel far enough from Earth just yet. The gravity of Earth will just pull a dead body back into an Earth orbit.
The Space Needle was lit purple in remembrance of legendary University of Washington football coach Don James.
It's Nicknamed “The 400 Day Wonder”
The designer of the nation's first shopping mall, John Graham, created the final, saucer-shaped design of the Seattle Space Needle. It was built in a record-breaking 400 days, earning it the nickname “The 400 Day Wonder.” Upon its completion, it was featured at the 1962 World's Fair.
The Seattle Space Needle: An Overview
It only took 400 days to build the tower. Because of this, the tower is sometimes referred to as the “400-Day Wonder”. Reaching 605 feet into the sky, the Space Needle has become an iconic building recognized against the mountainous backdrop of Washington State.
Experience two entirely new levels of thrills! From an all-glass floor on the lower level to floor-to-ceiling glass on the upper level, Seattle's “must see” is now a “must do.”
This new photo-realistic VR experience lets Seattle visitors jump from the top of the Space Needle (and it's included in the price of a ticket).
What color are old galaxies?
Older galaxies are redder because there are higher fractions of low-mass red stars, as the high-mass blue stars are short-lived. Thus, the combination of the observed light, the distance, and the color gives us the total mass in stars. Galaxies also contain gas, which can contribute significantly to the total mass.
Lead researcher James Trayford, PhD student in the ICC at Durham University, said: “Galaxies emit a healthy blue glow while new stars and planets are being born. However, if the formation of stars is halted galaxies turn red as stars begin to age and die.
Coming soon in 'Galaxy Gold,' Space Needle celebrates 60th anniversary with painting contest. The Space Needle will be painted “Galaxy Gold” for its 60th anniversary, the original color when the Seattle landmark debuted at the Seattle World's Fair in 1962.
On Saturday, Seattle's Space Needle went dark to join the Earth Hour movement, which was organized by the World Wildlife Fund.
The iconic sloping roof will don its original color, a dark rusty orange dubbed Galaxy Gold, and five contest winners will assist with the makeover. The Space Needle will change colors on April 21 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the landmark structure, which was built for the 1962 World's Fair.

"The Needle is built to withstand a wind velocity of 200 miles per hour," notes the Space Needle's website. Only a few lightning strikes a year actually touch the building, but the 25 lightning rods on the roof easily handle the load.
These wonders are marvels of engineering and design and works of pure genius and include Mount Rushmore, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Empire State Building, the Golden Gate Bridge, Hoover Dam, the Space Needle and the Washington Monument.
How long should you spend at the Space Needle? We recommend at least spending 2-3 hours at the Space Needle. By the time you ride to the top and look at all three viewing areas, you could easily spend an hour or two.
The cleaners will use a rope-access technique of cleaning to rappel down the Space Needle as they clean it. The rappelling method allowed cleaners to bypass construction of scaffolding.
There are now hundreds of turntables throughout the world. The entire Space Needle saucer does not rotate, only a 14-foot ring next to the windows rotates on the SkyCity restaurant level.
The 605-foot tower's paint job is part of the 60th anniversary of Seattle Center, the 74-acre campus that was built for the World's Fair and now features a sports and performing arts stadium, cultural centers, the city's popular independent radio station and other amenities.
Surviving a lightning strike
Although the vast majority of lightning strike victims survive, the effects can be serious and long-lasting. Survivors have experienced debilitating injuries, burns and ongoing disability, including symptoms like seizures and memory loss.
But the odds of being struck by lightning in a given year are less than one in a million, and almost 90% of all lightning strike victims survive.
Did someone jump off the Space Needle?
In 1975 there was an unauthorized jump by two base jumpers off of the Observation Deck. Both landed safely and were arrested. And only the year prior, a man was injured (including a fractured skull) after illegally parachuting off the 954-foot Columbia Tower.
