Berlin is the capital and chief urban center of Germany. Berlin was the capital of Prussia and then, from 1871, of a unified Germany. Though partitioned into East and West Berlin after World War II, the reunification of East and West Germany led to Berlin's reinstatement as the all-German capital in 1990.
It was only during the 1871 unification of Germany that the newly unified German Reich was first assigned an official capital. Since Berlin was the capital of Prussia, the leading state of the new Reich, it became the capital of Germany as well.
In 1701, Elector Frederick III (1688–1701) crowned himself as Frederick I (1701–1713), King in Prussia. He was mostly interested in decorum: he ordered the building of the castle Charlottenburg in the west of the city. He made Berlin the capital of the new kingdom of Prussia.
Germany has a population of 83,2 million people (2020); the capital and largest city is Berlin, with about 3.3 million inhabitants.
The name Berlin has its roots in the language of West Slavic inhabitants of the area of today's Berlin, and may be related to the Old Polabian stem berl-/birl- ("swamp"). Since the Ber- at the beginning sounds like the German word Bär ("bear"), a bear appears in the coat of arms of the city.
But Berlin's greatest advantage is perhaps its vibrant atmosphere. A Savills study ranked the German capital first among the world's tech hubs for buzz and wellness, a liveability measure that covers everything from nightlife and entertainment to pollution levels, quality of the local parks and commuting times.
In 1411 the mark of Brandenburg came under the governorship of the Nürnberg feudal baron Frederick VI. This began Berlin's association with the Hohenzollerns, who from the end of the 15th century as electoral princes of Brandenburg established Berlin-Kölln as their capital and permanent residence.
It was designed by Bruno Taut, one of Germany's most renowned architects, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks in part to its vision of affordable, state-owned housing. After Berlin went bankrupt 20 years ago, the city sold it to Deutsche Wohnen.

A Vote to Decide the Capital
The capital of pre-World War II Germany had been Berlin, and the capital of East Germany had been East Berlin. West Germany moved the capital city to Bonn following the split into two countries. Following unification, Germany's parliament, the Bundestag, initially began meeting in Bonn.
