What is the difference between a quartermaster and a captain?
A captain is the leader of a pirate ship and is responsible for making strategic decisions, commanding the crew, and leading the ship into battle. A quartermaster, on the other hand, is responsible for the ship's supplies, such as food and water, and is in charge of distributing them among the crew.
A pirate quartermaster (as opposed to one on more legitimate vessels) was often the second-in-command, and below him were the first and second mates. He was, then, the equivalent of a merchant First Mate or a naval First Lieutenant. Like the captain, the quartermaster could be voted in or out of office by the crew.
The Quartermaster's role was also a sort of magistrate. Unlike Royal Naval vessels, where the Boatswain would maintain discipline and handle the crew's punishment, this was the Quartermaster's responsibility. He also had to lead the attack when boarding a ship and usually assumed command of captured boats.

Second Mate (Second Officer)
The Second Mate is the ship's navigator and is responsible for maintaining efficient navigation equipment.
Mates, or deck officers, direct the operation of a vessel while the captain is off duty. Large ships have three officers, called first, second, and third mates. The first mate has the highest authority and takes command of the ship if the captain is incapacitated.
Perhaps the most famous Quartermaster General was Nathanael Greene, who was the third Quartermaster General, serving from March 1778 to August 1780. The first Quartermaster General to serve in the U.S. Army was Thomas Mifflin of Pennsylvania.

What does the E stand for in military rank?
