What is standard glass thickness?
What is the Thickness of Glass Used in Most Residential Replacement Windows? The vast majority of residential windows use Single Strength glass which is 3/32” thick. For larger windows, Double Strength, or 1/8” thick glass may be required.
Most standard residential windows are fitted with clear float glass, in thickness ranging from 3-5mm. Doors are generally fitted with 4mm or 5mm clear toughened glass.

What Is Tempered Glass? Tempered glass, (also known as toughened glass) is made by heating annealed glass uniformly. The annealed glass is then cooled rapidly by blowing air uniformly onto both surfaces at the same time.
Therefore it is much safer to use in vulnerable locations around the home such as in doors or low-level windows. The normal thickness for toughened glass is 4mm, this is the same as the standard glass. In a double-glazed unit you would have two panes of toughened glass, inside and out.
Toughened glass is four to five times stronger than annealed glass of the same size and thickness against impact. Toughened glass has higher thermal strength and can withstand a high temperature differential up to 250°C.

6mm Toughened Glass is up to five times stronger than ordinary (float) glass of the same thickness. Because of its increased strength, Toughened Glass allows architects and builders far greater scope in their use of glass in buildings.
The 10mm top shelf toughened safety glass was tested to a maximum weight of 500 kilomes.
