Why do my clothes keep getting stained in the wash?
If a washing machine is overloaded or detergent is not properly loaded, it won't properly dissolve in water – meaning it ends up on your clothes instead. Laundry detergent stains are annoying, but they don't have to be permanent.
Issues with Fabric Softener
The use of fabric softeners can lead to stained clothing in the washing machine. In most cases, people use too much fabric softener, which then doesn't have ample room to spread throughout the washer.
What is Scrud? Scrud is the name given to the waxy build up that can occur within any washer when the Fabric softener comes into contact with detergent.
Douse the stain with white vinegar, then apply a paste made of equal parts baking soda and vinegar. If this doesn't work, immerse the item overnight in a bucket of water containing a few tablespoons of detergent and vinegar. Rinse and wash the following morning.
Add 1 cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle or one-half cup salt to the wash to help hold in colors. Use color-catcher sheets, which trap extraneous dyes during the wash cycle to prevent bleeding.
The laundry water is hard: Hard water, characterized by its high mineral composition, can prevent detergents from fully dissolving. The wash uses too much detergent: Simply putting too much detergent in the wash can lead to stains.
Tartar Buildup
The tartar itself is porous and is highly susceptible to discoloration and staining. Foods, beverages, and other factors can turn it a noticeable brown color as a result.
Detergent residue is often the result of detergent not being properly dissolved before the wash. To prevent this from occurring in a top loader, add detergent to the water and run your machine for a few minutes before immersing the articles to be washed.
Add vinegar or ½ cup of baking soda to wash water to make everything soft with a fresh, clean smell. Vinegar works well for cleaning, deodorizing, and washing away stains.
Hot water can set some stains into fabric but can dissolve others depending on the composition of the stain. One example of a stain that requires cold water is a blood stain.

According to Speed Queen, anything below (60°F) can prevent your detergent from providing a proper clean. Cold water is the preferred choice to prevent color bleed. Also, choosing cold water can make your clothes last longer by reducing wrinkling, reducing fading and preventing shrinking – all while saving energy!

The problem, according to Tide PR person Lauren Beene, is that the pod doesn't dissolve fully in the water, causing a whitening agent to deposit on your clothes and leave a mark.
DRINK SPILLS
Certain types of fibers, such as wool, cotton, silk, and some nylons are particularly susceptible to permanent staining from coffee, tea, wine, etc. Be aware of hot liquids, especially. Of course, bleach and household chemicals (see below) can cause permanent staining as well.
Gravy, chocolate, rich sauces and dressings are all common culprits for leaving greasy brown stains on white clothing, so always begin by absorbing these types of stains. Salt, cornstarch, baking soda and talcum powder are all effective adsorbents which can be used to prepare the stain before washing it.
