The iPhone 12, the best-selling smartphone of 2021, was the oldest model in the top 10 for 2022. Its sales remained robust in the US, Japan and China. The price cuts with each year's new iPhone launch increased its value proposition while its 5G capability also played an important role.
Apple, Samsung and LG are the leading smartphone OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) in the United States as of September 2022.
Beyond the planning stage, iPhone 5 is still being made in America. Its brain, the A6 chip, is manufactured by a semiconductor company based in the US, perhaps an Intel or IBM plant or even a Samsung American subsidiary in Austin, Texas.
However, it is assembled in China. The main reason is that Apple's key suppliers are now clustered in just two key locations. Clusters of supply-chain businesses help Apple to keep manufacturing costs down and allow them to sell an iPhone for a price 66% higher than the unit cost.
LG had begun to lean significantly on original design manufacturers, or ODMs, outsourcing design and development of its handsets, to slash costs in the past few years. Last year, more than 70% of its orders went to contract manufacturers, and the company's phones are assembled in Vietnam, Brazil and China.

Motorola Mobility was eventually acquired by Google on May 22, 2012. Google sold Motorola Mobility's cable equipment business to Arris Group in December 2012, and Motorola Mobility itself to Lenovo on October 30, 2014.
Motorola's problem was that it was a hardware technology company, but from the mid-2000s it was software driving the mobile phone business. Here Motorola was weak – their phone's interface was seen as clunky compared to its rivals, and their smartphones dithered between Linux and Windows-based operating systems.
Why did Google sell Motorola?
Google wanted Motorola for the patents, not for the manufacturing. Apple's patent attack on Android licensees was slowing down and worrying Google's customers. Motorola had a massive patent library that can be used defensively.
