Hamner family, “Waltons” fans gather to mark latest project: a replica of house made famous by TV show (2024)

SCHUYLER — On a sunny afternoon, family of the late Earl Hamner Jr. were joined Sunday by dozens of fans for the groundbreaking of a planned replica of the house made famous in “The Waltons,” Hamner’s signature television creation.

About 100 people gathered at the Waltons Hamner House for the event. The house is Earl Hamner Jr.’s childhood home, now co-owned by longtime “Waltons” fans Ray Castro and Carole Johnson.

Castro, Johnson, family members of Earl Hamner Jr. and special guests used shovels with gold scoops to ceremoniously mark the beginning of the project, which will be built on a home site adjacent to the Hamner home.

Hamner’s surviving three siblings — Paul Hamner, Nancy Hamner Jamerson and Audrey Hamner — were among the family members who attended the event in Schuyler — “right where it all started,” said Paul Hamner, who came in from New Jersey for the occasion. Earl Hamner Jr., the eldest of eight children, based the show and other writings on his childhood in the Nelson County community.

“I look at it like a family reunion launching Carole and Ray on that project,” Paul Hamner said after the groundbreaking ceremony. “[I’m] so excited; the [replica] house is something I’d never imagine. I’m sure it’s going to be a hit.”

Castro estimated about 30 family members attended. He and Johnson purchased the property next to the Hamner house, known as the Giannini house, in December.

The two originally had planned to restore the Giannini home. Castro said they ultimately decided to demolish the house due to termites and black mold found there, and because part of the foundation had collapsed. The house was built in 1910 and had been vacant for about 10 years, Castro said.

Castro and Johnson announced in February a plan to build a replica house on the site with a similar porch and first floor as the home portrayed in “The Waltons.”

Castro said they plan to have the replica house constructed by fall. Once complete, the pair intends to use the house as a bed and breakfast.

Castro and Johnson also unveiled Sunday a design for the entire property they have dubbed as Earl’s Meadow, which incorporates both home sites, a barn and the surrounding land. The pair plans to complete Earl’s Meadow in 2019.

“To me the excitement was to have the Hamner family and the Giannini family come together,” Castro said. “Every member is part of the dream which is Earl’s Meadow. I’m glad I have their blessing. I know Earl is with us today and smiling down.”

Jesse Rutherford, Nelson County supervisor for the East District, was the master of ceremonies at the event. The Waltons Hamner House is in the East District.

“I’m excited for the future of it and what is to come,” Rutherford said. “I think it’ll be a wonderful complement to the Schuyler community.”

Lisa Giannini said after the event she remembers summer visits with her grandparents, Donald and Alma Giannini, who previously owned the house that was demolished. Donald Giannini was the brother of Doris Giannini Hamner, who was Earl Hamner Jr.’s mother and inspired the character Olivia Walton in “The Waltons.”

“I think it’s a good idea,” Lisa Giannini said. “I’m surprised they can fit that big Waltons house here ... I’m glad they can incorporate it into one big property.”

Bo Hamner, the nephew of Earl Hamner Jr., also attended to show his support for the project.

“It was sad to watch the [Giannini] house fall into disrepair,” Bo Hamner said. “I’m so grateful to Ray and Carole for taking over the property and breathing new life into it.”

Actresses Charlotte Stewart and Erica Hunton also were on hand. The pair played mother and daughter on the first aired episode of “The Waltons,” titled “The Foundling.” Stewart, who is known for playing Miss Beadle on another long-running TV show, “Little House on the Prairie,” said she was honored to be a part of the event.

Hunton said it was special to eat lunch with Earl Hamner Jr.’s siblings and other family members at the Waltons Hamner House.

“I met Earl a few times, so to meet and get to know his siblings, it’s very special,” Hunton said. “They’re just so kind.”
