Letter: $50-$100 tip is right, given how hard it is to be a ‘paperboy’ (2024)

$50-$100 tip appropriate,
given job of ‘paperboys’

We received a Christmas card with our morning paper from our “paperboy” (a woman).

I remember in the 1960s giving my paper route customers a card at Christmas as did my son in the ’80s.

The paperboy is a thing of the past, but the work continues. Our paper woman drives from Tracy to Castro Valley every morning. Our paper is never on the roof or in the bushes.

As a kid, we hoped for a Christmas gift from the subscriber — maybe $1-$5. This was in addition to the 10-cent tip each week.

So how much do we tip the adult “paperboy”? Probably $50-$100 would be appropriate, but that’s mostly because I remember how difficult a job it really is.

Merry Christmas to all the current and former paper boys and girls.
