Wizards of Waverly Place is a TV show for kids on Disney Channel. On a recent poll on Ducksters it won the most popular TV show beating out other popular Disney Channel shows like Jonas, Phineas and Ferb, and Suite Life on Deck.
Setting and Storyline
The TV show takes place in Manhattan, New York on a street called Waverly Place (this is a real street in Manhattan's Greenwich Village). The story focuses around the Russo's; a family who run a sandwich shop on Waverly place and live above the store. The three Russo kids (Justin, Alex, and Max) all are wizards. They must keep this fact secret while they get ready to compete in a wizard contest which will only allow one of them to keep their wizard powers. Their dad was born a wizard and lost his powers in a contest against his siblings.
The show is a comedy with funny stuff happening around the kids using and abusing their wizard powers. Justin is the brainy older brother who always follows the rules even where magic is concerned. Alex is the trouble making sister who has a big heart, but has issues with following the rules. Max is the funny (not so smart) younger brother who often gets caught in the middle.
Main Characters on Wizards of Waverly Place (Actors in parenthesis)
Justin Russo (David Henrie) - Justin is the oldest kid in the Russo family. He is brainy, follows rules, a bit nerdy, and is the most determined to keep his wizard powers.
Alex Russo (Selena Gomez) - Alex is the middle child and only girl of the siblings. She acts as if she doesn't care whether she keeps her wizard powers or not, but really she does. Alex is more street smart than book smart, she tends to get in trouble, and doesn't mind bending the rules a bit.
Max Russo (Jake T. Austin) - Max is the youngest. He is the funny kid and always seems to get caught between his older sister and brother.
Theresa Russo (Maria Canals Barrera) - Theresa is the mom. She was born a mortal and never had wizard powers. She doesn't like it when the kids use magic to solve problems.
Jerry Russo (David DeLuise) - Jerry is the dad. He lost his wizard powers in a contest with his siblings. He trains the kids in magic.
Harper Finkle (Jennifer Stone) - Harper is Alex's best friend. She makes her own "interesting" clothes. Harper has a crush on Justin.
Overall Review
We really like this show and tend to agree with our kid's polls that it is certainly one of the best shows on Disney Channel. The writing and acting are excellent and the comedy is pretty funny even to adults. Sometimes the themes may be mature for younger kids as there are girlfriend/boyfriend situations as well as monsters and magic.
