Most collection items are donated to the Smithsonian by individuals and private collectors or through transfers from federal agencies such as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the U.S. Postal Service and others.
Send your letter to Smithsonian Information at info@si.edu, or call 202-633-1000 (voice/tape) or 202-633-5285 (TTY). If the museum is interested in accepting your donation, museum staff will notify you of the procedures to follow.
For membership and subscription questions, please visit our Subscriber Services Site or email Smithsonian@SmithsonianService.com or call our customer service department at (800) 766-2149.
Vendors interested in selling products through the Smithsonian's stores should contact Smithsonian Enterprises. These items must reflect the mission of the Smithsonian, generally through a relationship to subjects covered by the Smithsonian's collections.
2 The Smithson ian considers itself to be a “Federal agency” but not an executive agency. Congress did not expressly specify the status of the Smithsonian under the Property Act.
What should I do? The Smithsonian acquires thousands of objects and specimens each year for its collection holdings through donation, bequest, purchase, exchange, and field collecting. Each museum and curatorial department decides on a case-by-case basis which objects to add to its collections.
The Hope Diamond Necklace
The 45.52-carat deep blue Hope Diamond is estimated to be worth between $250 - $350 million. It was ever so casually mailed to the Smithsonian in a plain brown wrapper via registered mail by donor Harry Winston. It's one of the most visited museum objects in the world.
In addition to using exhibitions to connect with the permanent collections, museums choose what to exhibit based on mission and strategic plans, market demand and relevancy and, of course, budget.
Is the Smithsonian a charitable organization?

Are my gifts and Friends of the Smithsonian memberships tax-deductible? Gifts to the Smithsonian are tax-deductible under Section 170(c) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code, in accordance with IRS regulations. The Smithsonian provides written acknowledgment of all charitable donations.
